I am continually meditating these days on this quote from one of my role models, James Stockdale, who survived torture and worse in Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam.

Can we just skip to the end and define what we can discriminate based on? Otherwise, we're going to be having this fight for every new demographic. Suggestion: "We comply with the EEOC and discriminate on the basis of ability, intelligence and hygiene".

I like how full text search of every book and human thought ever was a SOLVED PROBLEM in 2001, and now dicks at search engines and my own phone – a piece of silicon faster to respond than God was ever imagined in scripture – prevent it from working, _as a retroactive infantilizing design choice_.

I'm such a C# shill but,

any time I hear someone say "the garbage collector slows things down too much" I feel like they're not aware of just how many tools you have to avoid heap allocations

it seems to me whatever work that entails, it's almost always less work than using an unmanaged language

I'm seeing a lot of people saying things like "They should all go to jail, I don't even care if they did anything illegal." Fellow babies, I get it in the deepest part of me. But that conception is Trumpian. Remember what we've been saying about due process for everyone else.

The International Criminal Court is ditching Microsoft Office, saying it’s too dependent on US tech, in favor of Open Desk, a German open source alternative.

The move comes after Microsoft revoked ICC head Karim Khan’s email access when he was sanctioned by the US for the warrant against Netanyahu.

What if my laptop was stolen with my phone in a foreign airport and the only way I could get help was to message folks back home on Messenger? This is just about the dumbest thing ever when there are so many good ways to verify by, you know, actual data..

US expats: with the govt shutdown and big backlog of passport renewals, I'm thinking about renewing mine in RO when I go in Jan (it exp in Sept). Are renewals pretty quick in US embassies abroad? Do I have to give up my current passport like @ home? If so, how do I stay compliant?
