Experimental post: Mode 7? What About Modes 1-6?
Some games on the SNES, such as Super Mario Kart, boasted "Mode 7" technology. However, this raises the question of what happened to the previous modes. This post explains them and gives examples of their usage in Mario games.

Apparently some folks are playing real dumb about skull symbols so let’s play a little game I like to call “Nazi skull or not a Nazi skull”

First up, the Jolly Roger. This is a pirate skull, not a Nazi skull. It means you might get robbed, but prolly not genocided.

With me so far? 1/x

I agree that STEM, the social sciences, humanities and all the rest need to stand together against anti-intellectualism.

I am also aware that when humanities funding was being collapsed, there was not a lot of STEM solidarity and there are STEM folks *now* still suggesting under-bussing humanities.
I’m so tired of this, man. We’re dealing with an all out war on intelligence and higher education. STEM and the social sciences and the liberal arts need to all stand together instead of this absurd petty squabbling.

Maybe 90% of your userbase want AI, but those who don't REALLY don't. And don't tell me that JetBrains trained their own model on "permissive" licence data, cause that's not true.

It's trained on a super-shady TheStack codebase, despite the claims, further eroding trust

bsky.app/profile/soso...
Hope you have some vitriol left, cause "TheStack" training data they used is super shady

They use an automated tool to determine "most likely licence" in case none was provided (WTF?)

And apparently they take forever, if at all, to remove your code if you opt out.

Also, the security warning.

Still think Antifa isn't violent? Here's bodycam footage of Antifa founder B.J. Blazkowicz shooting a heroic member of ICE who was just trying to protect this great nation. Thank God we have Blazkowicz's girlfriend in custody.

I really hate the term "sideloading". I preferred the original term, which was "installing software on a computer that you own"

'Vibe physics' may be utterly useless - but 'vibe history' wasn't any more useful and it still took over bookstore shelves and is used to justify stripping funding from history departments and hostility towards actual good-faith trained historians.

I fear the same coming to the STEM fields. 15/

If "AI" was as valuable as they say it is, they wouldn't be selling it to you. They'd be using it themselves in secret to make the next Minecraft, the next Avatar, the next Hello Kitty and then they'd sell that to you.

They're trying to sell you a sick goose, while pretending it lays golden eggs.

I don’t know. I love this Joseph Fasano poem and have it pinned on my office door but I don’t know what to actually do about any of this.

Writing can be time-consuming and unpleasant, it's true, but it's important not to skip that part because it's a crucial element of thinking through an actual idea. The part of writing that's difficult is the formalization of proto-ideas into actual thought. You can't fob that off onto Clippy 2.0

The video is about a neat protective device in common household objects but its message is about understanding dangers rather than being afraid of anything and everything which is dangerous.

That message feels important right now.
