Kind of wild that while food assistance was withheld from millions of families, one Trump-supporting billionaire (Ellison) saw his net worth grow more this year than the entire SNAP budget. And the YTD gains of the other four richest men would’ve fully covered salaries for all 2M federal employees.

Earlier this year, I met a Croatian journalist who was in the US doing a piece on America’s politics and I asked her what surprised her. And she said, “What you all call the far left is just being normal.”

Pretend you’re 65 & act accordingly: save your pennies, visit friends, enjoy slow walks in your neighborhood, shrug your shoulders at old beef between family & friends, grow a garden, forgive people because they’re “still young” even if they’re not but hold all politicians accountable. Get a cat.
Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

Seriously, just look at Missouri, where an abortion rights ballot measure outperformed Democrats in 2024, because abortion rights are popular, and now their Republican legislature wants to override voters to put a repeal on the ballot next election, an attack on democracy.
Ezra Klein 🤝 Neera Tanden

Despite the overwhelming popularity of abortion rights in all states, we should surrender instead

it is possible for a society to distribute quality education in an equitable, fair, and accessible way.

it is not possible to distribute hierarchical elite power in a similar fashion, because that's not how elite power works.

the resentment around college admissions is fucking crazy but also tbh I think we should be talking much more frankly about the Ivy undergrads in particular not being meritocratic institutions but finishing schools for the super-rich. the legacy admissions are not an exception but the rule.

This bill is the definitive and durable proof that the government of the United States has decided that the people who live within its borders are its enemies, and that its purpose is to leverage its wealth and power to harm them rather than help them.

The country goes nowhere good from here.

Sen. Booker’s speech was a substantive and moral account of this moment. He did not read the phone book. He did not babble.
For 24 hours @booker.senate.gov laid out a detailed, damning, and critical narrative of truth, history, politics, morality, humanity.

What will you do?

what booker is doing right now is an example of what i mean when i say things like “we need more ambition right now.” there is room in american politics right now for people with ambition to take big stands and reap the rewards. he’s doing it!

🧵I think we need to talk about *waves hands wildly in all directions* differently.

I see 3 goals:
-Dismantling democracy+systems of accountability
-Advancing white supremacist policies here+abroad
-Immiserating non-billionaires for financial gain

Each action is toward those one/all of those goals.
So if I'm getting the chronology right, Trump/Musk & minions gutted the FBI in time for a Friday night news dump, hours ahead of launching their long-promised trade war. I hate to ascribe to them anything like careful thought but *wink* "they won't be talking about the FBI on Monday!" comes to mind.

I mean, in a country that prides itself on producing "leaders" and buying all their books and holding them up as avatars of all that is good, the two principal leadership habits we're currently seeing are 1. laying down like a coward at the first sign of trouble, or 2., going full fascist.

Make an economy where being a dirtbag is a viable lifestyle option, and you create a society that, as a side effect, allows people to create cool shit.

An economy friendly to dirtbags is friendly to *everyone* with a weird cool hobby.
