PSA. For the time being, I shall be taking a leaf out of the late Scott Walker's book and activating my social media accounts once a week. The rest of the time, my virtual phone will be disconnected. If you wish to get hold of me, I am here on Wednesdays. Thank you for your understanding.

They are the band I love most. The last time we saw them play when I was 13 or 14 we were allowed backstage, into the dressing room seen in Don’t Look Back, where I got autographs on the back of a Golden Eagle flyer.

… at Birmingham Town Hall with my brother and parents. I was 9 and it was my first gig. It still informs and illuminates my everyday. They were never for everybody but if they’d gone on and done an acoustic set at Woodstock in the rain they might be as well known as Canned Heat.

I was alerted to the Licorice news this morning by a new friend of the ISB
@iammilliam.bsky.social . I told him that I felt several people close to the band had known for some years and decided to respect her life choices. I was lucky enough to see Likky, Rose, Robin & Mike in 1969…

Likky is alive. Wow.

RIP Rachel Cooke, fellow Puffin Club member and evangelist of All the Devils Are Here, formidable critic and true believer in the power and importance of the good stuff, in whatever form it takes. I’m gutted we won’t get to talk about books again. My condolences to Rachel’s friends and family. x
We are very sad to learn of the death of our friend Rachel Cooke. In addition to being a wonderful writer and a superb critic, she loved books to her core. She kept us on our toes and it was a joy and a privilege to spend time with her, on and off the show. RIP. observer.co.uk/news/nationa...

"Bold".

Unlike Emerald Fennell everyone on this @backlisted.bsky.social podcast read the entire book, not just the first bit.

Give it a listen. It's good.

THE VERY ANGRY CATERPILLAR went over really well, phew. Thanks to all the students who participated, you were a brilliant audience and I loved the whole afternoon. A very memorable day at the end of a year I would prefer to forget. Thank you. 🙏
About to deliver my new talk, THE VERY ANGRY CATERPILLAR: UNLEASHING THE POWER OF YOUR INNER BOOKWORM, to a group of 800 English Literature students.

Because criticizing grammar is ableist bullshit most likely. You ARE an arrogant SOB.

Doubly so, given not a single part of your post follows traditional Western grammar rules.

I really enjoyed Flesh and I'm thinking about how Szalay's strategy of making his protagonist a blank slate is similar/different to Rachel Cusk's in the Outline trilogy
Still got it. Congratulations to David Szalay on winning the Booker Prize, most conspicuous of the prizes, for his truly excellent novel Flesh.
Thanks to all who came to the event with David Szalay at @waterstoneslpl.bsky.social last night. It was brilliant, so was he and I wish we’d recorded it. Ah well. You can still read Flesh before it wins the prizes.

I really loved making this episode and I am an Outline sceptic. Reading, researching, thinking, reconsidering and (especially) talking about Rachel Cusk, her work and the success of these novels, was educational, therapeutic and very enjoyable. Whether or not I changed my mind is largely irrelevant.
