Thank you so much! I haven't read them in so long; there's a few sentences I'd write just a bit differently, but looking back at them now I do appreciate the air of despondent misery. I was experimenting a LOT at the time with run-on sentences for tortured scenery and then later action scenes.
I read this story by @htblack.bsky.social and I was immediately blown away by the raw depiction of rural decrepitude. It spoke to so much of my lived experience and I highly recommend it:
