Part-time storm chaser.
Tornado about 90 mins ago in Creal Springs, IL. Like an idiot, I stayed too long and had to bail when the tornado took a left hook toward me. There is video of that too, but I’ll hold onto that for now.

SPC just dropped a lowkey forecast for a Tri-State tornado or a Mayfield 2022. Is forecaster Broyles getting overconfident from his recent success, haha?

Just looked at a bunch of hi-res models for tomorrow and the majority are putting out discrete (translation: standalone) supercells.

Seems like we could actually get some significant tornadoes in IL, IN, or KY.

Could be a wild chase day, especially with the potential for very large hail.

Right in the home zone for me. Tomorrow should be a good chase day. I will have to do some serious core dodging given the large hail potential.
NWS Storm Prediction Center key messages for the regional severe weather outbreak expected across parts of the Midwest tomorrow (Fri 5/16).

Well for one this seems overly conservative. The environment supports high-end probabilities if storms can get going, and that is true regardless of modality.

Will post more media from this day soon—which was also in May of last year. Here is the Greenfield, Iowa tornado as I saw it near Orient, Iowa.

I did something very stupid after getting this view and to this day I chase a little safer because of it.

This ended up being the most productive phase of the Oklahoma chase last may. And yes I had Braum’s for late-night dinner when I got back to Norman.

You can’t get food like this in Indiana.

This was earlier on the Oklahoma high-risk day last year. It was a cell not too far from Enid. Like the high-precip beast that developed to its South, it defied expectations and didn’t produce any solid tornado. But it was fun to watch it spin.

Remembering back to a year ago when I was on this high-precip monster in Oklahoma. Me and every other chaser in the mid-south.

It never produced a tornado of any significance but man was it a sight to see this storm along Oklahoma chase madness—helicopters buzzing overhead and a line of chasers.

These CAM runs are just not inspiring at all in terms of there being a big tornado outbreak on Monday. Especially if the goal is to see tornadoes in daylight.

I was about to head up to IA in the morning, but I think I'm gonna stay put now. I wonder how much weight SPC will give the CAMS tonite?

Another impressive severe hail event unfolding, this time in West Virginia

Though mediocre at first glance, the environment is very favorable for hail with supercells given straight hodos, and elevated buoyancy profiles due to high LCL. High RH aloft also minimizes entrainment.

MRMS FLASH unit streamflow now showing values approaching 10 in parts of the Memphis metro, which indicates that very serious flash flooding issues may be evolving. Flash flood emergency now in effect.

NWS Paducah went with the bold decision last night to not warn a persistently rotating QLCS, presumably because they didn’t want to set off sirens in Evansville.

I think the decision may have worked, but I’m still surprised that they just let it roll through Posey County unwarned.

-Finally, far SE Missouri is really good chasing territory. This isn't a secret, but it is as good as you can get in the region. I was down there two weeks ago for the big outbreak and even at 2am, it was very workable. And that was with dust storms concurrent with the supercells.

-There are some cool towns to hang out in or stay the night. Paducah and Carbondale are both underrated towns to visit, with small town charm and a dose of counterculture. Murphysboro is pretty as well.

I'll probably stay in Cape Girardeau tonight, which I'm not as familiar with.

- Those hilly areas and the more open areas often occur within the same county, so if you can be a quick map study, you can usually find some decent viewing ground for a given cell. Also the gridding of roads in IN and IL is solid. Solid but not great, and better in agri areas than woods.

-Southern IL, W KY, and S IN are a grabbag of chasing topography. There are hilly areas that resemble Appalachia and are not good for chasing, but usually there is some open rolling agricultural land nearby. Sometimes you get great visibility, but usually it's mid because of trees within 2 mi.
