I live in Hexham in the North East of England, close to Hadrian’s Wall. Mostly interested in history but also nature, philosophy and art.

Hexham Abbey Grounds Park, beside Hexham Abbey, is a peaceful green space in the heart of the town. It features lawns, mature trees, a band stand, and views of the abbey’s historic architecture.

Ælfwald I, king of the Northumbrians, was assassinated at Scythlecester (perhaps Chesters), near Hadrian’s Wall #OTD in 788. It was the result of a conspiracy formed by his leading courtier Sicga, who later killed himself. The murdered king was buried at Hagustaldes ham (Hexham). #medievalsky

Image of a bagpiper from the Leschman Chantry Chapel in Hexham Abbey. It’s part of a row of irreverent humorous carvings. Likely carved around the 15th century. #hexham #history

At Cragside, the Victorian country house in Northumberland, the dining room features a notable inglenook fireplace adorned with stained glass windows designed by William Morris. The windows depict the four seasons, showing the Arts and Crafts movement’s emphasis on craftsmanship and natural themes

Hexham Old Gaol, built in 1330–1333, is one of England's oldest purpose-built prisons. Located in Hexham, Northumberland, it was constructed to detain criminals and Scottish raiders during the turbulent Anglo-Scottish conflicts.

Hexham Abbey, founded in 674 AD by St. Wilfrid, is a historic church in Northumberland. It features a Saxon crypt, medieval stonework, and stunning stained glass. Once a priory, it has served as the parish church since the Reformation and remains a local landmark. #hexham #northumberland #church

St Aidan’s URC in Hexham. Frederick Douglass, renowned orator and abolitionist, himself an ex-slave, is believed to have spoken here in the 1860’s on his second visit to the town. Possibly in the now demolished church hall. #hexham #frederickdouglas #northumberland #history

Here are the late Bronze Age ramparts of Chanctonbury Ring in the snow last weekend.
It's weathered way over 2000 years of winters but the white stuff is now a much rarer visitor to the hill.

Recently visited Warden Hill Hillfort in Northumberland and thoroughly enjoyed seeing it in snow, which highlighted the contours of the old walls. I asked Chat GPT to draw the fort based on the Historic England description of it. Perhaps not very accurate but fun anyway! #hillfort #northumberland

Just finished listening to the audio book “How to Think Like Socrates” by Donald Robertson -
@donjrobertson.bsky.social . A very readable guide to applying philosophy to our own lives. Fascinating dialogues with Alcibiades. Lots of useful lessons for our current troubled politics. #philosophy

This is witch hazel (genus Hamamelis), a plant known for its distinctive spidery yellow flowers that bloom in late autumn or winter. It’s often appreciated in gardens for adding color during colder months. Photo taken near Hexham in Northumberland today. #nature #northumberland
