One of my favourite wall hung mosaics!
@stalbansmuseums.bsky.social
The ‘Shell Mosaic’ from Verulamium - the third largest town in Roman Britain which is situated close to modern St. Albans. The mosaic is one of 49 discovered during excavations of the site and dates to around 150 AD. The mosaic is on display at Verulamium Museum. #MosaicMonday

Great thread. Was just at the Hellfire caves a few weeks ago.
Whilst the mausoleum is great and all, he did bigger up the entrance to the hillfort....

A horribly presented video will tell you about the site. youtu.be/sGr9-qg12_U?...

It’s #HillfortsWednesday!

Did you know that there are more than 150 hillforts, hilltop and hillslope enclosures recorded on land cared for by the National Trust?

They're amazing archaeological sites, but also real havens for nature. 🧵

Enjoyed working with Jennie and Wessex Arch team on this, 1 of 5 commissioned for Beacons of the Past, an NLHF project.
I was such a micromanager, I'm surprised she didn't throw a brick at my head. But I really wanted something different here (season, time of day, etc) I think she did marvellously.

Happy #HeritageAtRisk Register Day to all who celebrate it, that is neglectful owners, dodgy developers, kick the can into the long grass officials and don't give a f*ck its the past not the future politicians.

This year 129 entries were removed in a good way, however 138 entries were added.

A splendid 2 days exploring the mysterious and not so mysterious Chiltern chalk figures.
Had a lovely visit to an iconic Chilterns monument today with @jonwoolcott.bsky.social , the man who's bringing us a brilliant new book in April!

In between rain deluges, we captured the impressive Vale below the Chilterns Scarp, and even managed to see and hear one of my favourite things

Excessive water usage is a killer for sensitive #chalkstreams.

Average consumption per capita in the Southeast of England is 143 litres per day.

But we can all do better. Looking at my account tho...
I'm feeling rather smug 🤣😎

It costs a lot less to house people.
