Bird of the Year voting opens tomorrow, and it is an outrage the takahē is yet to win. I'd like to take this opportunity to urge you to vote for the hide-and-seek legend from Fiordland, the roundest birb, and the one true pick for all you railfans out there
It’s Bird of the Year time, and the official railfan option is the MIGHTY TAKAHĒ, the largest living member of the rail family of birds

So when you vote, don’t forget to include the takahē in your top five: birdoftheyear.org.nz

I was officially conferred my doctoral degree! The hat symbolises liberty and the sword symbolises the scientist’s fight for truth, very special Finnish tradition 🎩 🗡️ 🇫🇮

Incredibly exciting! Very happy that we’re able to provide student travel for this workshop 🛰️
Been home today with a migraine & some low-level anxiety unable to focus or look at screens. Finally checked my phone to see that @hgeorgespace.bsky.social sent the best message of the past month: our NASA TWSC for IPM was selected! We can have better registration costs & fund student travel!

yay new plasma data in near-Venus space!!
Solar Orbiter is getting ready for a close encounter with #Venus.

Today’s flyby will be the first to significantly ‘tilt’ the spacecraft’s orbit and allow it to see the #Sun’s polar regions, which cannot be seen from Earth.

🧵 I live in Los Angeles. We have not had to evacuate and are safe, but like many people here, I have friends who have lost everything. I realize I can't combat the firehose (see what I did there?) of bullshit spewing about this disaster from internet and media sources, but I'll say this:

My new paper is out! Come check out how Pluto and Charon sealed their relationship with a cosmic kiss: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Capture of an ancient Charon around Pluto - Nature Geoscience
Numerical simulations suggest that Pluto’s moon Charon was captured intact, in a scenario in which the two bodies temporarily merged in a collision but did not coalesce due to solid strength effects.

"Thank you for getting in touch with New Zealand. We're at the beach until the sun stops being hot. Chur."
Everyone kinda jokes that the whole country of NZ just fairly shuts down from late December till some time in February, but honestly it's not that much of a joke.

We probably need to put up an Out of Office message on the country to warn folks.

IT WAS 62 YEARS AGO TODAY that we became an interplanetary species.
12/14/1962 Mariner 2 flyby of Venus revealed Earth's sibling planet to be a hellishly hot greenhouse world, ushering in an age of comparative planetology which has taught us so much about planets including Earth.

After calling them out as content scrapers I have been blocked by @nasauniverse.bsky.social @nasahubblenews.bsky.social and @marscuriosity.bsky.social

All three blocked me in the span of two minutes, confirming
they are scrapers and probably run by the same person.
