I have (Hindu) Lohana heritage and this was fascinating to learn! My friend married an Ismaili recently, and attending their wedding was delightful because of how much we have in common. Now I understand the roots of it in more detail - we truly are so similar!
My mom and stepdad are from the same diaspora group as Zohran Mamdani’s dad (same like “my stepdad was kicked out of the same town and knows some of his classmates”) and apparently the New York Times doesn’t understand how diaspora works, so I am going to tell you a little about my mom’s people!

When I was a freshman at UF, I campaigned for some friends who were running for student government.

The day before the election, Katie Miller (then Katie Waldman) and one of her friends threw away copies of the student newspaper that reported an endorsement for our party.

First and foremost, the models that drive this tech were created illegally. That's not hyperbole. We have the evidence that these companies went out of their way to find and download copywrited and trademarked works to train the models.

Why do I make a point to explain this issue? Not because I want to "defend" LLM tech. It's incredibly problematic. Primarily because it's built on stolen data.

The reason I explain is to help people understand what to expect. Even with tons of money being wasted, it's not going to die out.

Maybe a day to call all your reps again and to demand action

Anyone unfamiliar with how these systems work might think that an SSN makes for a natural primary key by itself.

But spouses can share a single SSN. People can and do have multiple, legal SSNs for a variety of reasons.

I guarantee you that Musk has no fucking clue what he is talking about.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

The wheels got stolen off my car this week. It was a bummer and resulted in many, many hours on the phone with insurance.

But I also felt community in a way I haven't in a long time. Multiple neighbors approached us to check in and offer sympathy. Our neighborhood text thread offered suggestions.

Reading Agatha Christie for the first time and something I really like is how, though you start with too many characters to remember, quickly they begin dying off. In a Jane Austen novel, you have to remember them the whole time.
