The two-child benefit cap was a Conservative policy designed to push children into poverty. Labour have kept it in since.

The Green Party has consistently called for it to be scrapped. If Labour now plans to end it, it should've never taken this long.

I've gone back and forth on whether to post about this -- part of me that is so, so tired of flaying open the details of our grief just to beg the world to care.

They killed my friend. They fucking killed him.

His wife is struggling immensely to feed their children. Anything you can donate helps.

I sort of forgot to mention that my podcast, It's Storytime With Wil Wheaton, had a wonderful test season earlier this year, and new episodes are on their way!

I will return on October 29th, with a spooky story.

Good thread
Shall we talk about ebooks?

It might be a bit of a weird thing for a physical bookshop to do, but bear with me. There's a reason.

Take a seat for a short thread. 1/?

“Only 5% of migration is from small boats, but it gets 95% of the headlines. It would be ludicrous to cut legal migration when we have 150,000 NHS vacancies."

Zack Polanski says politicians must stop fuelling fear and start telling the truth about immigration.

Another day, another whiner complaining that I use the singular "they" in my work, and of course they can go fuck themselves

Opinion | ‘They’ has been a singular pronoun for centuries. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s wrong.
Jane Austen did it. You can, too.

If it was as good as the CEOs think, surely we'd be leaping to use it. I'm a lazy man - I'd be quite happy to be my own little manager of the robot that does all my work. But then you look at the quality of the output and realise that it's just shifting around the effort from doing to re-doing.

As a physicist I can easily calculate time dilation from relativistic motion (time slows when you're moving fast) or proximity to a massive object (time slows in gravity) but I have yet to find a solution for emotional time dilation (the task takes five minutes to complete but six weeks to start) 🫠

I am so embarrassed for humanity.

We had this disease eradicated. The process of keeping it that way was SO SIMPLE.

And because of a bunch of idiots, and bunch of grifters making public health into an ideological football, here we are.

Just a faceplant. A completely unforced error.

If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow.

The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.

As someone who has remarkably few sex scenes across twenty novels (and what sex scenes there are, are mostly implicit rather than explicit), I feel this. I'm not the author for meltingly hot sex scenes. I will likely never be. I'm glad others are out there to, uh, service that desire.
My only complaint about romantasy is that people are starting to demand it of me, and I am not a spicy author. I am the Midwestern casserole of authors. There's cream of mushroom soup in there. Please don't make me write sex. It makes me want to die.

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

I've been thinking about how empowering it is to get into weightlifting. I mean, yes, literally. But also psychologically. As women, society tells us we need to be small, and that if we are not small, we must buy products/services to be smaller. And then one day you think... what if I get BIGGER? 1/

My point is this: You can ossify or you can build yourself up. You can stop moving, or you can start walking. I was made to lift heavy things. I was made to be strong. I was not made to shrink, to disappear, to focus only on societal expectations. I am growing in every way, and that's great. 10/
