Okay, for the folks who asked: here's the majority AI view, writing up the reasonable, thoughtful view on AI that the vast majority of people in tech hold, that gets overshadowed by the bluster and hype of the tycoons trying to shill their nonsense. anildash.com/2025/10/17/t... Please share!

Some people don’t actually practice Socratic dialogue, what they do is SoCRAPtic dialogue. These kinds of dialogues give the illusion of good-faith truth-seeking debates. But in actuality it’s an exercise of strong arm wrestle that seeks to put the opponent into submission or humiliation

Thinking about how the tech ecosystem prioritizes all else above longevity
But my HTML websites from back then still work beautifully today, whereas my pals’ masterpieces can only be experienced on old computers running obsolete OSes, browsers, and plug-ins. So, there’s that. Better to have bread for 100 years than cake for 5 minutes. 2/2

Counting things is, actually, political. It’s laden with choices about what to count, who gets to count and who gets counted, how to display numbers in ways that shape the possible frames for interpretation or which are more or less accessible, etc
Numbers aren’t political. Numbers are numbers. We INTERPRET numbers in different ways, but after all, they’re STILL numbers!

This is a great post, and it uses simple, compelling visuals to get its point across wonderfully: elroy.bot/blog/2025/07...

What it highlights for me is how professional, high quality graphics are often LESS valuable than amateur-ish, but viscerally obvious ones.

i think we face two separate problems here:
1. people are desperate for connection, living in increasingly isolated conditions thanks to less-walkable cities and communal spaces
2. people want friends that will basically operate as unpaid general contractors for emotional labor
“A growing number of people are using AI chatbots as ‘trip sitters’—a phrase that traditionally refers to a sober person tasked with monitoring someone who’s under the influence of a psychedelic—and sharing their experiences online.”
People are using AI to ‘sit’ with them while they trip on psychedelics
Some people believe chatbots like ChatGPT can provide an affordable alternative to in-person psychedelic-assisted therapy. Many experts say it’s a bad idea.

And it’s not just ChatGPT. This is the logic of every platform that values retention over reality, clicks over care, and profit over people. We’ve spent the last decade getting hooked — not held. Stimulated — not supported.

These tools were never meant to understand us.

there is a widespread problem of governments taking at face value whatever their tech vendors tell them - often because of lack of capacity to verify, but sometimes because of what I could charitably call wishful innovation
Gavin Newsom bragged that the AI chatbot from CAL FIRE is available in 70 languages, but it failed to provide any useful information to me in Chinese, and then kept asking in English if there was anything else it could help with. bsky.app/profile/sylv...

But I’ve rarely run across a better video example than this lovely moment shared to IG by seanandcaitlin.
