Porn addiction is a political front for anti-lgbt, misogynist, religious fascist propaganda. It does not exist, it has never existed, and by perpetuating or giving credence the idea lends legitimacy to dangerous a dangerous fascist movement.

The biggest fumble of Dragon Age: Veilguard was that it turned Dragon Age from a series with lots of religion but not a lot of gods into one with a lot of gods, but not a lot of religion.

This is unrelated to the very reasonable point about economy and food production, but I will say this: The giant castles! That's hard to do in *our* world, but I think you just need, like...a handful of earthbenders doing, like, an afternoon of martial arts. A very reasonable thing to have happen!
A kind of perennial fascination of mine is how much fiction underestimates the amount of labor needed to maintain basic subsistence by, like, several orders of magnitude.

To quote Terry Pratchett, "It takes forty men with their feet on the ground to keep one man with his head in the air.”

Man, sometimes people will go, "X has set back trans rights by decades" and share, like, a cringe meme or some stupid post and...I get it, you're hyperbolically saying that X is bad, but I think what set trans rights back by decades was a concentrated attack by super rich and powerful people

Very difficult to see it is just an extreme form of all of the worse elements of conservative and reactionary thinking, isolated from actual policy questions. It’s the hate and power without any functional governmental system or ideals.

Fascism is just the same stuff, concentrated for maximum hate.

Finally, treating fascists as unique, inhuman monsters actually helps Right Wing ideology. When fascism is treated as some utterly unique phenomenon, unrelated to the dominant ideology of everyday authoritarianism, corporatism, and - especially - racism, heterocissexism, and ableism, it becomes…

Third, I suspect generational trauma may have skewed your understanding of these issues. Your grandfather was right to make sure you understood the true risk of fascism, and its persistence, but showing a young child the unfiltered horrors of war is not effective pedagogy. It’s just traumatizing.

Art isn’t war, isn’t education in history, isn’t a “how to” for running a resistance unit, and isn’t an ideological argument for antifascism. Elements of these (and so much else) can appear in art, but it isn’t what art is or does. Attempts to combine them tend to be bad art and bad education.

the number of people who read this thread and go, "Ah, yes...it's fiction's fault people didn't realize fascism was happening" makes me want to scream, yeah, sure, it's TOTALLY Star War's fault and not the massive news media propaganda apparatus that spent years downplaying the threat
To whit, when actual fascists pop up now, the common refrain is it's not fair to call them Nazis, because we have a VERY clear idea in our head of what a Nazi looks like.

It looks like Indiana Jones villains. Like Colonel Klink.

Real Nazis wear suits. They own businesses. They're CIVIL, on paper.

It's one of those things where if you step outside between AC to non-AC, it just FEELS like you're spiting nature, I get why people think it has to cost a ton of energy. Like, it just FEELS like it should guzzle a bazillion volts to do it. Learning it's actually fairly efficient is a huge relief!

Climate austerity from the left is an ideological undercurrent that must be destroyed at nearly any cost because it is one of the most regressive and inegalitarian positions you can take. The social and health returns on adequate AC alone are gigantic relative to the environmental footprint.
The fact that Le Pen(!) of all people is calling for AC is not a good look for the political future of France
Le Monde is calling it hell but they're still saying air conditioning is not a solution

GENERAL STORYTELLING ADVICE

if a character is *alive* then they can do more than if they're dead

you'd be shocked how few authors seem to get this
I love that the Vorkosigan saga kills miles dad in book 12 and not book 1, making it several orders of magnitude sadder
