Crucial is shutting down — because Micron wants to sell its RAM and SSDs to AI companies instead. It’s already getting hard to build an affordable PC, and the exit of the longstanding provider of consumer memory is going to make that even more challenging www.theverge.com/news/837594/...

For anyone who’s unfamiliar, it’s worth noting that the next Bandcamp Friday (where Bandcamp waives its revenue share) is in two days, so now’s the perfect time to cancel your Spotify subscription and put that money toward buying actual music from actual artists!

in order: purchasing on bandcamp, streaming or purchasing from qobuz, streaming from most other platforms (apple music, tidal, deezer, etc.), or pirating (if financially unable to afford other options) are all valid alternatives to supporting the spotify corporation.

for example, the classic one: extra time on tests.

this is an accomodation because tests are a bad proxy for evaluating skill: they also, unfortunately, evaluate your ability to perform under time pressure.

this matters for some people more than others, hence, the accomodation

“X8aedz” is a perfect instance name because if you say it out loud you can see the exact instant the person naming it saw the price tag.
Announcing new memory optimized Amazon EC2 X8aedz instances

AWS launches X8aedz instances because apparently we hadn't hit peak alphabet soup yet. 5GHz processors! 32:1 memory ratio! Available in 2 whole regions! Pricing TBD but your CFO is already crying.

The admission that this game wasted circa 130GB of disc space for no particular reason or benefit is kind of funny because it raises very uncomfortable questions other AAA tier game developers are not brave enough to answer.
Helldivers 2 on PC has reduced installation size from 154GB to 23GB thanks to support from Nixxes buff.ly/YvXQnW6

I guess I came real close to getting verified and therefore frozen in time as "Ryan North? But he died 30 years ago... this very night!" and it's hard to look at that alternate timeline and not think it's... better

PRO TIP

If you have YouTubers you like and follow and watch their videos a lot

leave innane/positive comments on their videos. The algo is all fucked up for YT creators and a lot of videos get sent to the void for whatever reason.

I hate doing it, but I've been trying to do it.

A friend asked for book suggestions, and honestly I'll concede on this one...

Anyway, check out The Atrocity Archives by @cstross.bsky.social if you somehow haven't read it and James Bond the IT guy fights Eldritch horrors sounds up your alley.

I've been reading this series avidly since about 2010 and this is a really good one - also, probably about as good a first book in the series as the actual first book...

Highly recommended.
BETTER STILL it seems to be on Kobo for $2.99 (at least in Canada; probably the USA also)—a better choice of ebookstore (it doesn't subsidize Jeff Bezo)
Psst: if you're in the USA or Canada, Amazon.com are selling my novel "A Conventional Boy" for $2.99 for the next two weeks! (It's a promo to push my next novel, "The Regicide Report", which comes out at the end of January.)

Hot take: the context in which the art is made matters and should influence your opinion

Without context you'd never know George Orwell was a government plant who worked for the BBC, which also promoted all his work, and was a die hard anti-communist. It explains why his endings are so bleak

As someone who works on the interaction layer of software: it's this.

Stupid trends in hardware self correct after a generation or two, but *software* ratchets in the direction of unusable because designers are occupied with interaction patterns and not whether the fucking thing works properly.
i think it's useful to look at areas where the *tech* has gotten much better while tech *interactions* have gotten way worse. streaming has gotten worse, google search has gotten worse, digital cameras are leaps better. apple's silicone is so good it's threatening their user upgrade cycle
it’s so weird to look around and realize like, tech and media are materially worse than a decade ago
