Following the tragic deaths over the weekend, I wanted to understand were there areas in Ireland that were more dangerous than others for road deaths and injuries.
I've produced the map below, which I hope will draw attention to where road safety efforts may help save lives.

It's good to see Aberdeen rolling out its 20mph limits across the city. Another Scottish City saying the #20splenty where people are.

At the commemoration ceremony of the 🇱🇺National Association of Road Victims today, we thought of all the victims of road accidents on our streets. Every injured person, every life lost, is one too many!

Ann Arbor has committed to Vision Zero.

I am not really seeing it front-and-center in our transportation projects, at least not explicitly. In conversations, however, I am assured it is a priority.

Are we afraid to own it? Are we afraid of push-back if we use the specific phrase? #A2Council

It’s wild to see this in person, then struggle to convince Village leaders that it’s possible and incredibly vibrant. It’s hard to feel like the work ahead isn’t insurmountable. We’re going to spend *years* testing a couple flex posts as if we’re the first town on the planet to ever use them.
Voorstraat in Utrecht: a true fietsstraat where bikes come first and cars are guests. It’s not just safer and more relaxed to cycle - the whole street benefits. Outdoor cafés, quieter homes, and a vibrant public space. When you design for people, cities flourish.

This is really important.

The main thing that makes it hard to achieve integrated nature and green in cities isn’t density of buildings or density of people — it's density of cars. And the more well-designed and integrated density of people & buildings you achieve, the fewer cars you need or want.

As Doug points out on this pod: Dense walkable cities are the antidote to fascism.

The route to fascism lies in empathy free living where you live in your unwalkable suburban bubble, road rage against other people in cars, and only interact with people outside your family when buying something.
The message consultants all say that when you discuss urbanism you're definitely never supposed to bad-mouth cars, lest you turn off thin-skinned suburbanites. But fuck it, I'm not running for office, the world is burning, & YOLO, so: cars fucking suck!
Yes, you weenies: a war on cars
Sarah Goodyear and Doug Gordon join me to discuss their new book and why a future with fewer cars is a happier one.

You can judge any city by the quality and vitality of its places for public life. Here in Torino Italy it’s the many piazzas, the pedestrian streets, & the public market. Many cities had to claim these places back from cars.

Don’t have those kinds of places in your city? Are you sure you’re a city?
