Hi Bluesky! Hope everyone is doing well. This is a friendly reminder that if you haven’t hopped offline lately to connect with other people in your area doing good work you absolutely should! The fastest way to get angry and scared is to isolate yourself. Build community offline too!

Wanted to wish everyone who won in last night’s primaries a hearty congratulations - @mikiesherrill.bsky.social will be a fierce advocate for New Jersey families and I know she’ll be able to stand up to the authoritarian excesses of Trump when she’s our next Governor.

Hi Bluesky! Hope everybody is well. I’ve been staying off of here because the doom and gloom and constant bickering just isn’t good for my mental health - but I’m popping in with a reminder to my NJ friends to vote in the primary! Early voting is open through Sunday and Election Day is Tuesday.

I really need every single person who told his family that this man was dead to write them an apology for inflicting deep psychological trauma on them for the purpose of clicks. And the conspiracies are already starting on here and getting boosted by the algorithm.
I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

I can’t find it now but I was struck by, in a post talking about the State Department’s rationale for deporting international students, amidst all of the hysteria from white liberals about the unprecedented nature of this, someone made a minor note that the law he’s citing is from 1952.

Hi Bluesky! Hope everybody’s doing well.

Want to pop in and say that I saw a TikTok just now where a white woman talked about how she is fleeing the United States for Italy because she “doesn’t recognize this country anymore”.

I’m not sure what country she’s been living in.

A few months ago I saw a TikTok that was freaking out about the overturning of Sullivan v. NYT because the poster saw Steve Wynn submit a petition to SCOTUS. He said the free press was pretty much over.

Today SCOTUS declined to hear the case.

We love the NYT Pitchbot in my house (well, apartment). This is something I’ve been hearing all over the place in a non-satirical sense but here on the ground we’re clear-eyed and focused. New Jersey has important elections coming up and we’re ready to go to work *offline*!

Hi all! Hope everyone on here is doing well. Just issuing a reminder that panic is not a helpful or productive emotion in this moment and I’d encourage everyone to take a breath and listen to the experts around us instead of the loudest panickers (sp?) in the room.

Part of being in politics means losing, but man, this one hurts. I’m proud of the campaign that we ran and know that Nicole will go on to do incredible things in whatever her next venture is - but Trenton really lost out on a smart, thoughtful leader in the Assembly.

I will also add that while I’m disappointed Nicole did not win the replacement vote, I’m deeply proud of the work we put in to win over the dozens of committee members who backed us and congratulate Assemblyman elect Singh. I know he’ll do good work for us.
Balvir Singh elected to State Assembly - New Jersey Globe
Burlington County Commissioner Balvir Singh won a New Jersey State Assembly seat today and will fill the unexpired term of now-Rep. Herbert Conaway, Jr.

Just popping on to say that I’m still around - been a busy few weeks here with many conventions and all kinds of hard work. I’ll be in and out sporadically but it’s hard to be in a space like this where the impulse is to react instead of to respond. Take care of each other, I’ll be back! ✌🏻

tired: the TikTok ban is an example of Democrats being incapable of reading the room

wired: social media discourse broadly should not be legitimized simply for being popular because all platforms are fundamentally illiberal and their mere existence doesn’t make them beneficial to society
January 19, 2025 at 6:30 PM
Bluesky has radicalized me into the belief that so many people who claim to be thought leaders are actually not very good at the thought part
The biggest issue we have today is a dearth of epistemic responsibility. Forming good beliefs takes a lot of curiosity and effort and very few people seem to want to put in the effort to do any basic digging or reflecting on thing
January 18, 2025 at 7:50 PM
Unpopular hot take here but I really think that so many of the hardcore anti-TikTok ban leftists don’t actually know very much about politics and didn’t know very much about politics when they were on TikTok either
a puzzling thing to me is that the Tiktok-RedNote people seem to be behaving as if it were 1970 and China was being portrayed as a backwater, whereas the tone of China coverage in the US in the last twenty years has been 'look at this cool thing!' or 'be worried how advanced the Chinese are'

So after pointing out that Keith Edwards was having a meltdown in real time over Trump doing something that the federal government has already done for centuries to Black and Indigenous people he said I was “insane and the reason we lose elections” and blocked me. …..Okay.
January 15, 2025 at 2:19 AM
@anglynhays.bsky.social Following you because you seem cool and apparently Keith Edwards is losing his shit at us pointing out his white privilege lol
January 15, 2025 at 2:16 AM
I do find posts like this darkly comical because inevitably like some sort of möbius strip turns into a conversation where people begin to share examples of Dems at all levels of government actually responding proactively and the goalposts shift to “no, no the REAL ones”
been pondering this behavior, all these Dems Mr Magooing around while our democracy is slowly torn up, and I think a lot of it is American exceptionalism brain. they just cannot believe how deep in the cack they are

the 'they're all corrupt, nothing matters' attitude is one of the reasons Russia is a godawful place and it's very worrying how much it's spreading in the United States
Since the “at their core, do they really *believe* in anything?” question is also leveled at the Democrats our core problem may be that a broad enough swath of the public believes that politics is all Kayfabe so why not vote for the most cynical bastard who promises to hurt your perceived enemies.

Keep the pressure on, and don’t let off!
HR 28, the bill to require genital inspections in women's sports, passes with just two Democratic votes.

I think it says so much about this political moment that so many of the responses to this article and others like it are “What are the Democrats doing to stop them?” as if the Democrats did not win the election and are being subjected to something patently illegal

Figured I would log in and check to see what was going on in the world.

First thing I saw was somebody saying people on Medicaid need to scrape together their resources and move.

Logging back off again.

It is deeply disturbing that a group of white men whose identities and ideologies were built around objectifying and dominating women are now in charge of the most powerful platforms in the world and see more of each other as the solution rather than the problem.

I said back in 2018ish that NowThisNews with their short, cropped out of context clip stitching broke the way people were taking in current events and it’s disheartening to see seven years later just how right I was.
