There are plenty of great Hugh Masekela albums out there, of course, but I think my favourite is the one which features a song by his ex-wife Miriam Makeba and another by the president of Guinea.

The Covid Inquiry finds that if Boris Johnson had called the first lockdown even one week earlier then it could have saved at least 20,000 lives.

Here's a quick reminder of what Johnson was actually doing during those weeks

I just found the work of jamesapearson.bsky.social on Instagram. As an autistic person whose brain can completely freeze-grind to an absolute halt so I can’t work and can barely move, this small poem of his has really helped me today Thankyou so much James 🌿:

This is always a danger when authoritarians come under pressure: that they respond either by ramping up the assault on their enemies, to distract attention, or by seizing more power, to fortify their position.
Really unnerving point from Nicole Hemmer, historian of the right: Trump's Epstein fiasco could drive MAGA to push him to go even fuller authoritarian, because the whole project is now in such serious doubt. She's so good on MAGA's future.

"Nuremberg defendants were surprisingly normal, opportunists who, as he put it in a 1946 lecture, 'exist in every country of the world, who would willingly climb over the corpses of half of the … public if they could gain control of the other half.'”

I cannot begin to properly articulate how upsetting it is to have had people baselessly accuse trans people of being groomers and pedophiles only for it to come out that they were deliberately doing this as part of a project to provide cover to actual groomers and pedophiles in positions of power

It is incredible — the blind spots you develop when you’ve never, ever been poor.
Trump claims that food stamps "puts the country in jeopardy. People that are able-bodied can do a job, they leave their job because they figure they can pick this up, it's easier."

I reckon a reasonable test of someone’s patriotism might be if they want to see the end of an historic national institution that is trusted and respected worldwide because they don’t like everything that institution does.

Absolutely right. I criticise BBC News, because we need it to be as good as we know it can be. People like Farage criticise the BBC, because they work for its competitors and don't want it to exist.
🎯 Davey is spot on. "We can have criticism of the BBC, but within that, we need to recognise how valuable an institution it is [and how] precious to our country. And that's one of the reasons why people like President Trump and Nigel Farage, want to undermine the BBC." 👏🏽~AA

This analysis explains Labour’s approach too. Ageing white men must be placated at all costs in all circumstances.
American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

In 1996 I did a little in internship at BBC Westminster. At the time, Robbie Gibb was one of the producers there. Even in that period, he was self evidently a pro-Tory apparatchik, who made no attempt to hide his agenda from his colleagues or even from the little work experience kid.
