It’s just occurred to me that the Andies in Handy Andies is short for Handkerchiefs. I am 56.

Hey, seems I still haven't run out of things to say about ABBA.

We were bunking off school one day, skulking in the back of a cafe in town, when we saw the school caretaker come in, causing us to duck down under the table.

Of course, it wasn't the school caretaker. It was the guy who played the Grange Hill caretaker. I guess he was perfectly cast.

Do you remember that they used to tell us where the referee was from? Even today, I remember that George Courtney was from Spennymoor.

One of my “official jobs” at Watford is to shout ‘too much Xmas pud!’ at the linesman, just once, first mistake he makes, first game after Xmas. It’s a long tradition and I worry who’ll carry it on in my dotage.

Referees are so buff these days. By contrast, if you watch The Big Match Revisited on ITV4, you'll notice that they all look like the janitor in Grange Hill.

When you see or hear mention of Sunderland's manager, does your inner jukebox immediately start playing: (a) Call Me The Breeze by JJ Cale; (b) Run by Spiritualized; (c) go away I don't know what you're talking about?

Jan 1 seems a good day to rationalise my hoard of old football magazines. Match Weekly used to have a Star Gallery section in which readers could send in likenesses of their favourite footballers. Looking back, I think someone was having fun with the selections.

I'm rarely happier than when I'm writing and I wrote a lot in 2025. Features for The Times, Uncut, The New World and five cover stories for Radio Times. Liner notes for my two favourite Pauls: Macca and Weller. And my Patreon site. Here are some links to long(ish) reads you may have missed (thread).

I often think about David Scott and the joy he derives from what he does. In another era, he would have been as lauded as many of his heroes were before him. But look at him. His expression says, "It blows my mind that this didn't exist before I somehow created it." www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORoF...

They check into a crow-tel or an Airbnbeak.
Where do the crows who hang out on our roof live? They spend all day playing games, getting in fights, and plotting against the human world. But where do they go at night? Ornithologists, we're looking for answers.
