We were bunking off school one day, skulking in the back of a cafe in town, when we saw the school caretaker come in, causing us to duck down under the table.

One of my “official jobs” at Watford is to shout ‘too much Xmas pud!’ at the linesman, just once, first mistake he makes, first game after Xmas. It’s a long tradition and I worry who’ll carry it on in my dotage.

Referees are so buff these days. By contrast, if you watch The Big Match Revisited on ITV4, you'll notice that they all look like the janitor in Grange Hill.

Jan 1 seems a good day to rationalise my hoard of old football magazines. Match Weekly used to have a Star Gallery section in which readers could send in likenesses of their favourite footballers. Looking back, I think someone was having fun with the selections.
