“I want everyone in my lab to be exposed to many ways of thinking about biology,” says Whitehead Institute’s newest Member, immunologist Zuri Sullivan. “Creative science often comes from making connections across systems, and Whitehead is uniquely well-suited for that.”

The tumor microenvironment is made up of not only cancer cells, but also vascular cells, immune cells, and fibroblasts. By uncovering how these cells interact with each other, researchers at Whitehead Institute hope to discover new opportunities to treat cancer.

Interesting piece by @gretafriar.bsky.social about the choice by five physician-scientists to pursue foundational science research.

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.
“The ecosystem of research and the creation of new knowledge in universities has been so powerful for American prosperity, American freedom, American ingenuity. To have that disrupted by government overreach is a disaster for this country.” —Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on

this is incredibly cool work and good news. prion diseases in humans are horrifying -- like alzheimer's but fatal, and condensed into a year or two of rapid degeneration. the treatment is currently only in mouse trials, but what a beautiful implication for the future of medicine
