Good to know that whether it's the President of the United States shaking down the national broadcaster or the prospect of foreign football hooligans rampaging through the country's second city you can always count on the British political class to put the UK dead last!

Happened to have the news on last night when Tim Davies resigned & I couldn't help but notice how, within the space of ~20 minutes, the story morphed from one about a dodgy edit aired over a year ago to the BBC's alleged "anti-Israel bias". Real stink of shit coming off all of this.

It was insulting enough back in the 2000s but it's just plain ridiculous to see these Atlanticist throwbacks dust off their "save the world from authoritarian kleptocrats" act while they simultaneously glaze the second Trump administration.

The phrases "if you don't like my changes, leave" and "shaking off the fleas" come to mind.

I’ve been around enough comfortably well-off people to get the awful suspicion that it’s not Twitter so much as holidays and expat friends in Dubai that have radicalised them into the idea of small privileged native class and a helot class of guest workers dependent on you
I really think people are underestimating the degree to which 21st century politics are going to be apocalyptically bad; we are collectively sliding towards mass ethnic cleansing being the norm in the Western World, out of no reason but pure fucking spite and empty nostalgia.
Tory policy is to revoke permanent residence (ILR) for everybody who does not earn £38k - deporting most nurses who have ILR
This is put in the video as "who is unlikely to contribute more than they cost"
NB: video does not say EU settled status is exempt
No govt since Idi Amin has done this

Of course all the young(ish) Tories are pivoting to outright Powellism, it's not as if they have a rich record of success to draw on.

No need for a moral panic about the welfare system
It’s far from perfect, but the UK’s spending is broadly controlled and employment is high

Constantly struck by how far removed the American right's online conception of itself as a crusading force of chiselled neo-spartans is from its real world manifestation of pea-headed slobs in ill-fiting body armour brutalizing random members of the public.
In Chicago, four vehicles descended and eight ICE agents moved in to kidnap a child.
She screams, “I’m 15,” as ICE yanks her from the car and kneels on her neck.
This is not about immigration enforcement.
It's about terrorizing Americans.

you know I wouldn't say I had high hopes for "the Spectator interviews the Tate brothers" anyway but somehow the piece is worse than I thought it would be

Find yourself someone who loves you as much as the BBC loves political movements that explicitly want to destroy it.

The conference feels like that of a big party - but retains the insurgency vibe that the party is seeking to channel.

The political motivations aside there's just something a bit sad about seeing bits of this country's tatty, austerity-scarred infrastructure bedecked with temu England flags; feels like we're literally papering over the cracks here.

As far as I'm concerned what is happening in Gaza right now is akin to what happened in Eastern Europe in the late stages of Nazi occupation. Any bastard still making excuses can go to hell.
Footage of a young boy no more than three years old rolling about on the floor in agony missing an arm where an Israeli bomb ripped it off just below the shoulder.
But remember kids the feelings of the people committing and cheering this genocide on are more important than all else 👍

10 years of non-stop, all channels pissing and shitting about free speech and this is where we've ended up.
Police in Canterbury today informed a protestor that the phrase "Israel is committing genocide in Gaza" could be considered a declaration of support for Palestine Action and therefore a terrorism offence.

I obviously can't speak for other jews, but to me the world's richest man tweaking his AI so that it now describes things it doesn't like on a scale of "bagel to full Shabbat" and "Peak Jewish" is a somewhat higher priority than people being mean about the IDF at Glasto.

Every ten years someone suggests cutting social benefits and everyone nods that it's 'the tough choice but the right one'
Five years later, people shake their heads at poverty and grow angry people are not being looked after.
Same people diamond hard for the cuts, boohoo at their inevitable result

Find it very hard to engage with any kind of post-apocalyptic/dystopian fiction these days knowing I can go online and read about infinitely worse things happening right now, in real life and with the license of democracies, such as my own, that supposedly value human rights.
‘The Hunger Games’: Israel’s aid death traps for starving Gazans
Near-daily Israeli massacres at food distribution sites have killed over 400 Palestinians in the past month alone.

I get that to an extent NYC is its own thing but it is funny to think that these bastions of liberal thought spent six months crying out for a progressive politician who could reconnect with young people in the new media landscape only to instantly curl their noses up the second one came along.

A reminder that the @nytimes.com told New Yorkers to not rank Mamdani at all, & instead endorsed former hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson.
Tilson sits at a whopping .8%.
Corporate media trust is dead. They killed themselves by failing to fulfill their promise of holding the powerful accountable.

It was always thought-terminating bullshit but it is particularly galling to see all the usual suspects dust off their War on Terror spin about a uniquely barbarous and bloodthirsty Iran while every day brings news of yet another food line massacre in Gaza.

🚨 England’s rivers are under threat.
Water extraction is at record levels & the system meant to track it is broken. Licensing's outdated, loopholes huge, no one truly knows how much water we’re taking.
