Box office will never be a result of the quality of the work itself but the promotion and people involved. Tron Ares is 100% people not being familiar with the franchise and "It's morbin time" guy
I think Leto’s less of a problem than a script that consistently misses what could be interesting about the story the film tells. A better liked, or simply better, actor could have helped some, but I doubt this would have made the movie much more successful. There’s simply too little there.
