Otherwise, we are doomed to remain on the back-foot seeking to undo the harm done now rather than charting a better course that sees immigrants as the human beings they are.

It is CRUCIAL that we not simply push back against the flagrant xenophobia being propagated but also FIERCELY advocate for a better, more just framework for immigration; one guided by a commitment to dignity and justice ⚖️ ✊🏽

The truth is, immigration enforcement policy has never been about "reducing crime", "protecting our national security", or "boosting the economy."

@jennifertaub.com with the terrifying details. Also, I think she is absolutely correct that most people cannot comprehend the scale of this evil project, nor the enormous budgetary increase for ICE contained the the Biff Pile of Shite Bill.
Thank you. I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but wanted to share this as it goes in detail about the danger we face.

Donald Trump's immigration agents are parading around masked, in unmarked cars, and snatching hardworking people off the streets — ripping them away from their families and disappearing them into federal detention labyrinths just to meet indiscriminate arrest quotas.

Some immigrants have gone a week without showers. Others sleep on bare floors. Medications have gone unprovided. As detentions have soared, former detainees, lawyers, family members and lawmakers tell us conditions in facilities across the country have become intolerable.

Applying for asylum is HARD, and every time I hear about people who have successfully claimed asylum or who have some interim status being taken, I flinch at the sheer weight of paperwork that people have submitted to because the fear for their lives was so stark.

Does it matter to the court that people who are tortured and subjected to this kind of persecution are known to have psychological issues tracking time while it happens? No.

Your statement is inconsistent and therefore you are not credible.

And you need someone to go through your statement with a finetooth comb to make sure is consistent. Otherwise, you will get your claim denied because at one point you said you were in solitary confinement for a month and another you said it was for five weeks.

Those reams of evidence must be obtained from a hostile regime, and hostile regimes very often do not say “oh yeah, we totally took that guy and tortured him.”

People need to provide reams of documentary evidence: hundreds of pages demonstrating that you, personally, were subject to persecution because of your religion or political beliefs or whatever form of asylum you’re claiming.

The asylum process is horrific. People need lawyers to navigate it successfully, which is incredibly costly. One of the reason you need lawyers is because the slightest inconsistency in your story will be interpreted as you not telling the truth.

I think a lot of people—including many who are very sympathetic to asylum—have some idea that the asylum process is easy and involves showing up and saying “I want asylum” and then being granted asylum.

The Asylum Denial Machine

In April, immigration judges set two alarming records by closing over 11,000 asylum cases and denying 80% of them in a single month. An avalanche of asylum denials is just beginning.

I understand why Democrats are being restrained about this but the right's effort to lie about what happened here is incredibly disrespectful to the victims and requires vociferous pushback. The shooter appears to have been an anti-abortion zealot and a Trump voter. Don't let them avoid this.

Hegseth so clearly is unqualified to run the Pentagon. This isn’t just a failure to safeguard highly sensitive US national security information, it’s nuts. Shows either his lack of intelligence, expertise, or judgment—or quite possibly all the above www.nytimes.com/2025/04/20/u...

The Dallas ICE office is involved in a mass removal effort targeting nearly 200 people — many without removal orders — scheduled to be deported to El Salvador today.

This is not just cruel – it is lawless. I refuse to stay quiet while families are being torn apart, and lives are being put at risk.

It’s important to note this is not and was never about citizenship. It’s about removing diversity and dissent to authoritarian power.

Every man denied due process deserves basic rights because they are human. But remember that they are just the first and no one is safe:

Exactly. And if he had committed a thousand crimes, it wouldn’t be a heavy lift to prove just one. But DHS and the White House offer nothing but conclusory bullshit.
It's not relevant whether Abrego Garcia has committed thousands of crimes. Disappearing him off to an El Salvadorean maximum security prison *without due process* is wholly illegal totalitarian bullshit. Everyone who has been sent there by this administration should be brought back, not just him.

Bone chilling.

A court ordered Kilmar Abrego Garcia to stay in the United States.

The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that he was illegally removed. Trump is pretending he won the ruling 9-0.
