If you’d like to feel old, know that there is an entire collection of YouTube videos of people reacting to songs on this album. From like the last two years. And they’re all in their twenties.

During the Charlottesville protests a person ran over and killed a protester, Heather Heyer, and GOP legislators responded by trying to pass regulations to make it legal for people to do this.

Important to also include the more mundane, every day "visits" that Federal and local law enforcement pay to activists and organizers just so they can let you know that they are watching you.
Police in the US do their best to kill and maim protesters on a regular basis.

Those who aren't maimed or killed, prosecutors do their best to bury under the jail.

And cops work with armed right-wing vigilantes to kill even more.

And yet people are still coming out. It takes immense courage.

A leaked DoJ memo calls for prosecutors to charge people who film ICE with “domestic terrorism”

They don’t want their atrocities documented.

They don’t want a historical record.

They don’t want the world to know.

That’s why we have to keep filming. Keep speaking out.
Justice Department says filming immigration raids is 'domestic terrorism'

MAGA and DHS are melting down over Kilmar Ábrego García “making TikToks.”

I went to look at the video they’re complaining about, and all he’s doing is lip sync to a Christian song in Spanish about trusting God amid trials and tribulations.

Does my network contain a California tax lawyer who can help a widow straighten out a horrifying post-death earnings boondoggle? @dataandpolitics.net is the widow in question
Seriously, are there any tax lawyers who will tell a widow at the end of their rope what to do?

I don't know how to tell the iRS my husband is dead.

It’s not the makeup or hair or clothes or any of the aesthetic stuff. My chemical balance was wrong. My smell was wrong. My skin was wrong. I was missing secondary sex characteristics that needed to be there. I needed the base. The foundation of me. Or else I couldn’t build the person.

Transition is bespoke to every trans person. I was out for 8 years before starting HRT. Thought I could be fluid “bigender” for a while. Then I was full time fem for 3 years before going on HRT. I couldn’t continue living without the physical effects of it. It was mandatory and life saving.

The US legal regime at the local and federal level often uses criminal conspiracy statutes to lock people away for protests involving *property damage*.

Not to mention right wing counter-protesters in the US are armed with guns. Two of my friends have been murdered by armed right-wing activists.

Western European countries are accustomed to visible political conflict.

Farmers blocking streets with tractors. Yellow-vests pushing and shoving with police. These protests enjoy a degree of popular tolerance if not support.

US protesters face terrorism charges and decades in prison for this.

European policing is generally anchored in the European Convention on Human Rights, which mandates that deadly force be used only when "absolutely necessary".

In America, we have the "warrior cop" mentality coupled with qualified immunity. It's almost unheard of for officers to face discipline.

In 2019, the rate of fatal police shootings in the US was 3.1 per million residents. By contrast, the rate in France was 0.14 per million, and in Germany, it was lower.

In Germany, police officers discharged a total of 85 bullets at people in the entire year of 2011.
I’ve said it and I believe it is true

There is a willful forgetting and suppression of the memory of the hundreds of protests that shook this nation for the past decade and a half. So while Canadians and European laypeople whine “Americans don’t do anything,” the Americans are actively suppressed

Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question:

Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends.

Make. Friends.

Oh how cute! They stay young forever that's just so.. WAT?!? OMFG! NOOOOOOOO!!!!
There is a thing that can happen to praying mantises, called "Peter Pan syndrome" by keepers, where they keep eating, keep apparently thriving, but stop molting while still sub-adult. This inevitably kills them, as they crush themselves inside their old exoskeletons. It sucks.
