This is why for a long time I've found the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science a rather insulting propaganda exercise

CSIRO funding as a percentage of GDP:

2024-25 = 0.03

...

Scientific extinction event imminent?
The CSIRO cuts are just the tip of the iceberg for Australia's science funding
Australia is known as a country of innovators, but with a combination of brain drain, continuous cuts, and a loss of critical science projects, is Australia losing its edge?

Illegal landfills, meanwhile, have no restrictions on what enters them, no lining + no filters. Until strong measures are taken to deal with illegal dumping, people's health will continue to be at risk from the chemicals they can contain.

Historic landfills can contain items we use less today or wouldn't dispose of in landfill. Think lead paint or batteries, asbestos, arsenic. Until relatively recently, there was no requirement to line landfill. Many are in flood or coastal erosion zones.

Plastic pellets are often mistaken for fish eggs + eaten by sea creatures. Because plastic is so absorbent, it soaks up pollutants from water which are consumed along with them. These beads were being used at a wastewater treatment plant so who knows what they could have absorbed.

Vivimos rodeados de vida. A veces, sin darnos cuenta.
Cada árbol o lagartija con la que nos cruzamos forma parte de una red de relaciones ecológicas. Y tal vez sepamos ponerles nombre o número a algunas de esas especies.
