In the news: In which we learn that our leaders find it easier to believe "AI is the future" than to believe that actual, living human beings who make art for a living have rights and deserve respect. Our consent doesn't matter to them. Only appeasing the tech bros matters.

I waited 14 months for a publisher to issue a contract with a "no AI" clause (it had to be all lawyered, whatever). I'd do it again. I'm not agreeing to AI covers, audio, translations, blurb, anything. We stand together or we fall apart.
Writers: before you sign a contract with a publisher, make sure AI isn't replacing your illustrator, your translator, your editor, your jacket designer. Readers: if you're thinking of buying a book, do the same. Refuse. Resist. If AI garbage doesn't sell, people will stop making it.

also if you are a younger artist looking for work please watch out for these because they are taking advantage and specifically gunning for you. it's evil
The telltale signs of a scam every time: extremely tight deadline, terrible pay, absolutely no description of what the assignment actually is, "email me back immediately or I'll have to move onto another artist"

by all means lol

"Why are you not supposed to publicly criticize fanfiction?"

Because you're bitching about a free service that takes a mountain of effort, provided by someone who takes time out of their busy day to provide this service, because they didn’t do it exactly the way you wanted, WHERE THEY CAN HEAR YOU.

This 2025 stop calling yourself a "content creator"

You're an artist, graphic designer, a video editor, an entertainer, musician, a streamer, a cook, a craftsman, an animator, a storyteller, a writer, a painter, a woodworker, a tailor...

You are not a faceless "content" machine.

Block every asshole who shows up on Bsky.

Don’t even think about it. Just blockaroo. Blockity block.

Block ME if you think I’M being an asshole.

This place, as opposed to the old place, needs to be the place where assholes don’t go to frolic.

No frolicking assholes is what I’m saying.

Take it from a librarian, the smallest things count! Website traffic, social media likes, newsletter sign-ups - this is vital data, evidence we use to prove that we are needed. And of course, every item you borrow, every resource you use, every program you drop in on ACTIVELY helps us.
Public libraries remain one of the best things ever about this country. Support your local libraries, friends.
This went great! VERY engaged audience!

I love doing library events.

If you turn to retail therapy today, get off of Amazon or Sephora or whatnot and go check out those indie shops run by queer creators and the like that you bookmarked weeks and months ago.

One note, just to be safe: BlueSky's DMs aren't encrypted. Don't put stuff there that you wouldn't want to be made public.

Oh, and one more thing:

Keep making art. (Yes, writers, that includes you.) Now, and always, is the time for the transgressive, the messy, the comforting, the taboo, the tooth-achingly sweet fluff.

Not “content”. Transformative work. Original work. Fanart. Fanfic. The familiar and the new. ART.

I feel like I need to tap the sign cause I keep seeing people trying to "dunk" on hateful peeps on my feed.

This ISN'T TWITTER.

Please don't make it into it.
