I work in academia and am afraid of fascism, consider myself pretty clear eyed. This video makes me angry. These are the most privileged faculty on earth (all at Yale). Most of us don’t have jobs in Canada waiting for us. It’s the dressing the decision up as resistance that grates the hardest.
Petrova's story stands on its own. It is also, though, a sharp contrast from the loud scholars of authoritarianism that have made professional relocation outside the US (while returning to visit) their banner act of defiance www.nytimes.com/video/opinio...
Video: Opinion | We Study Fascism, and We’re Leaving the U.S.
The decision by these three Yale professors to move to Canada is both a warning and a call to action.

My work is funded by NIH grants. This doesn’t affect my salary, but it will strip the infrastructure necessary to actually run my projects, including putting together proposals for future grants. I don’t know how universities could survive this without amputating large parts of their institution.

Sheinbaum should just rebrand Mexico as "The United States" in response to mess with Trump, especially since "Estados Unidos" is already in the country's full name.
What would be a good replacement name for America? Maybe like The Fuddrucker’s Republic?
The Mexican president has rebuked Google’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico on Google Maps and threatened official changes to Mexico's name for the U.S.

People who actually care about the working class are focused on building solidarity among a spectrum of identities without telling people to negate theirs. “Leave identity politics at the door” is just identity politics for people who see their own identities as the established norm.
So this is what we're doing now. Cool cool cool.

I wish the Democrats pushed this narrative: the Republicans are losers. They are weird freaks who hate democracy precisely because they’ve built a deranged fantasy world to insulate themselves from the reality that most voters would never in a million years buy what they are selling.

Whenever people say "Shawn Fain should run for office", I think about how much he can accomplish as UAW president - he has levers unavailable to members of congress.

Solidarity.
Here’s that excellent new ad from the United Auto Workers again, from the official UAW channel this time.

Fight For a Better Life
There is only one answer to the threat we face as a nation. The answer is solidarity.

This is what democracy looks like.
Good point here: the new UAW -- free of corruption, with a directly-elected president, & fresh off a big bargaining victory that created spillover raises for nonunion autoworkers -- has more appeal than the UAW that lost past elections at VW.

Love to see it. The progressive incumbent just crossed the 50% threshold she'd need to win the race outright (and avoid campaigning until November). She was at 44% or so on election night and has been steadily creeping up ever since (election night ballots are by mail and skew more conservative).

Not being forced to sit in your personal car do to literally anything is what separates today's L.A. and an L.A. that will would be the best city in the country, if not world. Just miles and miles of flat, easy-riding land under abundant sunshine, stretched between the Pacific and snow capped peaks.

Glad they're doing this, but it's kinda darkly amusing that it's the county that houses a lot of companies that make our tech and also refuses to build dense housing.

UAW 2865/5810, who represent UC academic employees, won e-bike discounts that the UC eventually decided to roll out to all UC faculty and staff. Now we just have to make LA safe enough to ride them, and this is a step in that direction.
We are so proud to be endorsed by UAW Region 6, a group that represents more than 100,000 active and retired UAW members!

UAW also committed to form a Divestment and Just Transition working group, investigating its potential economic ties to the conflict and explore how we can effect a just transition from war to peace for US workers. I'm proud to have voted for 1) direct elections of UAW leaders and 2) Shawn Fain.
