🧪 For some lighter science news here's an intriguing story from the thawing north. I first encountered it when Leanne presented a poster with her excellent undergraduate research at a student symposium a few months ago. Now science writer Ned Rozell wrote this: www.uaf.edu/news/the-hol...
The ‘Hole-in-the-Ground Girl’
Leanne Bulger recently found a new hole in the forest floor on the west end of Fairbanks. Into it, she poked a long plastic pipe.

Dear Concert Reviewers,
Please don’t say the concert “kicked off” when the opening work in question is “contemplative” and “crystalline”. Use your words. Use your ears!

#Skype is going away & they want users to shift to Teams, even though it doesn't offer equiv. functionality. Only ever used Skype to call landlines/mobiles fr. my Mac for interviews that I needed to record with #AudioHijack. Have belatedly realised I can do the same thing with Facetime sans video.

Search traffic is up for Fanny Hensel's String Quartet... so I'd like to remind everyone that the most widely used edition--and therefore most performances--are wrong.

tldr: use Furore's edition or my edition, not Breitkopf & Härtel's

Thank you @rollingstone.com You are doing the work.
The first 10 days of Trump's administration have been marked by an unprecedented barrage of barbaric policy moves and casual executive depravity.

In many cases, these actions have flown in the face of the law, decades of tradition, and even the Constitution.

Wikipedia is the last good website, the one staple of the early internet that hasn't been degraded by pursuit of profit.

It's not an acceptable academic source—it's subject to change—but it's a great first cut, and has citations to acceptable sources.

We can't let post-truth reactionaries ruin it.

Artist bios continued… Why do artists/agents supply only long bios (e.g. 900w) with no shorter options, plus stern injunctions against editing, when they can surely SEE that no presenter in the world publishes bios that long?! Most programs allow 300w, some less. Write your bios accordingly!

A concert artist agent once sent me a bio with this message:
“If the biography is too long for you, please try to shorten it by yourself. You know best what your audience needs to know :)”

Such a refreshing change fr the usual this-bio-must-not-be-altered-and-all-edits-must-be-approved messages.

I'm mystified by program note writers who submit commissioned work without the following info in the file:
Name of composer (as a heading)
Title of work (as a heading)
List of movements where relevant
Their own name as author (!!)
Year note was written
