this is great advice at a time where i am daily looking at my little notebook of short story ideas followed immediately by hyperventilating into a paper bag
OH haha also I forgot, I wrote a guest blog for @brocktonwriters.bsky.social and it went live a while back!

Basically when you ask me "Does this idea have legs?" the answer is:
- Probably!
- If not we can fix it
- If they're wonky we can fix that too

With examples!

Arsenal Pulp Press is proud to be a #CertifiedCanadianPublisher. 🇨🇦

The majority of books sold in Canada are published by foreign-owned companies, yet Canadian-owned publishers produce the majority of books by Canadian authors.

as @ridethekick.bsky.social said of baseball yesterday: anything can happen, until it doesn't, and if not, you do it again

Has this World Series consistently featured the highest quality of baseball? No. Has it featured the widest array possible of beautiful, weird, specific baseball delights? Yes.

I'm doing a bastardized version of nanowrimo (bastardwrimo, as my friend hyemi put it). here are my november goals:

1. sit down to my writing daily, for any amount of time
2. read at least 10 pages daily, of anything
3. walk daily
4. journal daily (based on julia cameron's morning pages)

Indigenous horror may seem new to many, but it is ancient. It is born from stories that carry lessons, warnings, and survival through generations. What is new is seeing those stories retake their rightful space in the contemporary horror landscape.

i don't understand why they're called the toronto blue jays and not the toronto baseballs. i'll never understand it. same with the dodgers, they should be called the baseballs too. more people should be like me and speak out when they see that something is wrong

Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription “QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.

i think this is so common among learning writers focusing on sensory descriptions. you SEE how it moves; it also LOOKS unsettling. both are about how it looks, so they go together, right? takes longer to learn that sensory and comparative components need to have a direct relationship for it to scan
weird reading gripe: I'm noticing an uptick in similes and metaphors that don't quite work. it'll be like "bitter as seawater" or "in constant motion, like a cockroach." like, I get the vibe the author is going for but on a mechanical level it doesn't make any sense.

the problem is that I believed the mariners could beat the dodgers. the only people more aware of toronto's sports curse than toronto fans are canadians who aren't usually toronto fans, and I don't believe, even as a jays fan now, that toronto can beat anyone. it's toronto

some book-buying woes from recently. tried to preorder an indie paperback from a canadian publisher; it has been out for over a month but is still stuck in limbo at the US border. wanted to preorder a new hardcover but, alas, it is forty-one entire canadian dollars.
