When I think of his movies, I think of many other voices: Nora Ephron, Stephen King, Aaron Sorkin, Christopher Guest, Kathy Bates, William Goldman. To me that speaks of generosity, of a spirit of collaboration, of understanding that filmmaking is not a one-man operation. I wish we had more like him.

Because if you care about securely owning a movie that you love--as opposed to "owning" it only until a license agreement over which you have no control expires without warning--you need a DVD or Blu-ray. The hardware may be yesterday; the concern is very much of this moment.
Why do (us) old people want to burden Gen Z with our nostalgia for an antique piece of hardware in the first place?
A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?"

He said, "I don't know, like $500?"

Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

The BBWAA didn't vote Bonds in, but by the end it gave him a ~65% supermajority, and might have gotten to 75% had the Hall not cut 5 years off his (and every other candidate's) eligibility as one way of preventing that, then introduced a new rule this year that could bury his candidacy with finality
Ive always loved Ratto’s curmudgeon opinions and find him a good writer, and maybe im misunderstanding it, but why is he bashing the Hall itself here. The BBWAA didn’t vote Bonds in. The Era committee didn’t vote Bonds in. Any maybe the domestic abuse played a bigger part than people want to admit.

The current Supreme Court has forfeited all legitimacy.

Democrats (and everyone) need to address that reality.

John Roberts > Roger Taney.

Court needs to expand. And have fixed terms—like *every* other supreme court in developed world. And have ethics rules, like all normal organizations.
