A highlight of my year was attending a Spider Biology Field Course at the Southwestern Research Station in Arizona. Here are four nighttime shots from that amazing week: an Arizona blond tarantula; a Couch's spadefoot toad; a stick insect on a creosote bush; a sleeping male longhorn bee at night.

The 25 of December is when the "Twelve Days of Christmas" actually begin, known as Christmastide.
And there are theories that "the partridge in a pear tree" started as a magpie in a pear tree as it was a motiff in older popular songs. 🐦🎄

Finally got some photos of Australia’s “blue ant”, Diamma bicolor, which is not an ant at all but a shockingly large metallic blue thynnid wasp, wingless and solitary, that hunts mole crickets. Been meaning to shoot this thing for years.

Benedikt Pleyer/Nomadic Nostoc filmed these tiny ostracods collected from the beach of a Japanese island.

Vargula hilgendorfii live in marine sand & emit a mix of luciferase & luciferin that lights up to deter predators.

The same chemicals produce firefly glow.

Exacum affine is just one of 76 spp from tropical Africa, Asia & Australia. Its showy flowers are fine examples of herkogamy (spatial separation of ♂ & ♀ parts within a flower). This one is cultivated as a florist plant. Some ssp of Exacum are mycoheterotrophs. #Gentianaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Share your knowledge if/when you can. Teaching other people how to do what you do doesn’t lessen your art - it just means more and better art for everyone.

I appreciate when people are willing to tell me about their brushes, how they study, etc… I want to put that back out into the world.

A more complicated ink work. Zoe meets Il Quinconce, a crow shaped spirit, for a dance in the graveyard. Il Quinconce is a mischievous and trickster spirit, but not an evil one. His name comes from his eyes, that continuosly change in place and number, following the scheme of a die faces. He's hungry for music, so the best way to keep him in friendly terms is to sing to him, even if you're not a good singer, or offer him a dance, even if you're a bad dancer.

Day 6 #ArtAdventCalendar • Another #SciArt #symptomatology #embroidery, this one about my iliac vein compression sydrome and the stent I have to repair it: deep dilation (2025).
