If the civil rights movement "met people where they're at" there'd still be whites-only water fountains. The only rights it would have secured is voting, certainly not banning housing discrimination or legalizing interracial marriage.
It definitely is a purity test because everyone does has rights but the Trans issue (as far as sports,etc) is still extremely unpopular and isn't supported by majority of Americans (both parties).
