Can’t say too much about my job these days but international affairs (especially Asia) is my specialty. I love films, novels, and history. Degrees from Oxford, Virginia Tech, and the London School of Economics. Opinions are entirely my own. He/him

Every Republican President of my lifetime has ended their term with a higher unemployment rate than when they began while every Democrat has finished with a lower unemployment rate than they received - and yet the public almost always rates Republicans higher on the economy.

For everyone working in democracy and human rights: if you’re still standing after this year, take a moment to thank yourself. It’s been a lot. But setbacks are temporary and our cause will prevail, because people everywhere want to live in freedom and dignity. Wish you all a hopeful Thanksgiving!

My wife went through this process. It’s horrific that it’s being turned into a game of Russian roulette by ICE.

The photos of the Hong Kong fire are heartbreaking. What makes it even worse is knowing that the lack of press freedom and the absence of democratically elected leaders will only hinder a real investigation and meaningful accountability. 香港平安!香港加油!

If there was a bipartisan consensus, why did only Dems charge the cases?
This kind of bothsidesism leads to people checking out of participating in politics. It’s toxic.

I hope folks realize that between Trump, Kushner, Hegseth, Witkoff, Noem, RFK, Jr., Kash Patel, and Tulsi Gabbard, this country is almost entirely undefended.
Q: Have you heard this audio that Bloomberg has of Witkoff coaching the Russians on how to appeal to you?

TRUMP: That's a standard thing. He's gotta sell this to Ukraine, he's gonna sell Ukraine to Russia. That's what a dealmaker does. I haven't heard it but I heard it was standard negotiation.

The United States is justly criticized for having learned the wrong lessons from the outcome of the Cold War. It should also be clear, however, that Russia and China also learned pretty terrible lessons from it as well.

It’s not so much one being made as one being released: the four hour cut of Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve admitted it was “quite strong” but refuses to release it or any deleted scenes.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Congressional redistricting is monumentally important. But for Black people in places like Fayette County, TN, it is the County Commn where the stakes are highest.

What SCOTUS does in Louisiana v Calláis may threaten Black representation across the rural South.

He is not the most powerful man in science. He is the most powerful man in pseudo-science.

He is not trying to lead our scientific institutions. He is trying to destroy them.
Over many interviews, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Michael Scherer about how he plans to remake America’s public-health system. Can he lead the scientific establishment he’s spent much of his life crusading against?
