Finally pulled the trigger on joining this app, so I guess I'll introduce myself! I'm a Fisheries Biologist with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe in Idaho, working to protect Bull Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout in the Coeur d'Alene Basin (among other research!)

This should be the lead story in all major national news outlets. Public health people prefer to stay out of the limelight unless there is no other choice. I can’t overstate how bad things have to be for 9 former CDC directors to band together and pen an op-ed in the NYT warning the entire country.
9 CDC Directors going back to 1977 speak out. What RFK Jr has done to our nation’s public health system "should alarm every American."

It "is unlike anything we have ever seen at the agency, and unlike anything our country has ever experienced." www.nytimes.com/2025/09/01/o...

I spoke to @ninalakhani.bsky.social for this article and reading it was still a gut punch. The US’s gold-standard scientific funding system has been completely demolished. I genuinely don’t know what to do with what remains.

And it’s going to get even worse under the new budget.
By me: A generation of scientific talent is at the brink of being lost to overseas competitors by the Trump administration’s dismantling of the National Science Foundation (NSF), with unprecedented political interference jeopardizing the future of US enterprise.

Why should scientists engage with faith communities about environmental issues? Grosh says religious groups often have resources and influence - one example is the Catholic Church owning millions of acres of property (i.e. land) around the world that they manage #IAGLR25

"What's a religion talk doing at a science conference?" poses Katie Grosh of Yale Divinity School - and answers it by saying faith communities are places of trust and deep engagement where conversations about water science can tie into faith traditions #IAGLR25

Cuts to NOAA funding threaten our ability to predict and monitor hurricanes and tornadoes—putting lives and communities at risk. But NOAA’s work goes far beyond weather. Guest blogger Dr. David Shiffman shares 10 vital but lesser-known roles NOAA scientists play.

Far too much of the media coverage supporting NOAA only mentions one of many things they do: here are 10 more.

Anyone celebrating federal employees getting reinstated, you need to dig deeper: the people I know who have been reinstated in a number of agencies were immediately put on administrative leave, which means the Administration is organizing a work-around to continue reducing the federal workforce.

Dear Elon,

Here's a list of @biologicaldiversity.org's accomplishments this week. We sued DOGE for hiding documents from the public and @realDonaldTrump thrice to save endangered species. Last week we sued Trump 7 times for destroying oceans, wetlands and wildlife.

Efficient enough for you?

YOUR FAVORITE WEATHER APP IS JUST A PRETTY DISPLAY OF NOAA DATA

Ppl seem to think that "NOAA weather forecasts" means climate-, boat-, or "in addition to my app"-weather. But the weather forecasts *we all use* are made from the NOAA data *we all paid for*

Make that part clear when you ⬇️
I’m thinking we should spread this news about the firings at NOAA as far and wide as possible. Like cancer research, weather forecasting seems likely to be broadly popular across the political spectrum. apnews.com/article/nati...

It matters that scientists speak out against what is being done to US science.

Staying silent is neither "objective" nor "staying out of politics".

Silence now *is* political - it supports the status quo, says "nothing to worry about".

We need to sound the alarm.

You can tell Nancy Mace stopped paying attention to biology after the first month of 5th grade because 1 in 500 people born with male phenotypes have XXY chromosomes and 1 in 20K born as “biological males” actually have XX chromosomes. Even “biological sex” isn’t actually binary anywhere in nature.
When I was in residency I had to watch a teenager and her parents brought to tears when she learned that she had Turner Syndrome (XO).

But Nancy Mace doesn't mind being horribly cruel.
