"But [the past] is out of your hands; it happens before the gameplay ever starts. The only thing you actually control is what you will do moving forwards—and these choices set up who you want your Morgan Yu to be." — C. C. Rayne

Arkane feels like the only developer who pays attention to _fashion_ - the worlds of dishonored and prey feel like they have actual aesthetic trends and ideas reflected in clothing and architecture and god the character designs still hold up so well

spoke with a few game devs students the other day and i was very happy to hear that some of them consider prey 2017 one of the best games they've ever played

it's a juggernaut of level & systems design coupled with immaculate art direction

what a shame microsoft shut down arkane austin

"people can still download your art from bsky and feed it into AI" if gamer behavior has taught me anything, just one extra button press is more than enough to annoy a MASSIVE amount of people into not making the effort

Weird to know a few different friends going for the same senior narrative role and to watch the (very qualified) women be filtered out in the first round by in-office requirements. Knowing how doable remote narrative teams are, it’s hard to believe it’s not intentional.

Essentially, I think that LLM-generated dialogue only makes sense if you believe that the product of writing is words.

But the product of writing isn't words, any more than the product of justice is prisoners, or the product of love is weddings. The product of writing is meaning.

I wrote an article about dialogue choice as part of a narrative designer’s toolkit *aside* from branching, instead considering how choice can invite us to *perform* a character.

My case study is South of Circle’s beautiful fuzzy meaning-making (using symbols instead of words). 💜 Give it a go!

You don't need to be able to read every pore and eyelash on a character's face for "good" graphics. You need good art direction and design. Those are what ensure your game still looks striking and memorable even decades later.
When you consider that this beauty runs on 25 year old hardware, the possibilities for us are still endless.

As the backlash to generative AI in video games continues to pick up steam heading into 2026, it'll be fascinating to see what is considered "made with generative AI." Can a dev team say they're not using AI if they're writing design docs with Copilot or using chatGPT to make schedules and budgets?

There was one thing that none of my mentors told me about life in a large bookshop....

The pages of 45000+ books slurp a lot of water out of the air 📚

The humidity in here is currently 25%. When the temperature drops, it can get down to 20%.

Nobody warned me I'd need gallons of moisturizer 🙄

Unpopular opinion for some reason: I really like slow burn stories that get you invested in the characters and set up a reason for being.

Stories that require patience that I now can show again

I'm so ready to be invested in so many worlds...

If that becomes a reality, I will actually just quit buying games. I'm not contributing any money to that filth.
