I’m seeing a lot of posts about how certain immigrants sent to El Salvador are not actually criminals and this is true but I would also like to remind you that people with criminal records shouldn’t be subjected to this, either.

This is one of the few upsides of having been laid off. At least I don't have to try to function as normal during zoom calls and such.
It’s so weird how we’re all just working like this is still a normal country.

The US has treaty obligations & trust responsibilities to Native American sovereign nations.

Massive cuts at BIA, BIE and Bureau of Trust Funds Administration violate more than a century of treaty law and federal trust obligations.

Project2025 would eliminate agency support to Tribes.

I love how one of the flu strains for 25-25 is called "Fuck It" 10/10 no notes
This does *not* mean no flu shots in the US next year - not by itself, anyway.

The WHO picked and published their recommended strains as always. This year. It’s an A/H1N1, an A/H3N2, and a B/Austria (+ a B/Phuket for quadrivalent shots*).

US manufacturers *can* still use the WHO guidelines.

First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year.

“'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'"

Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder.

Tomorrow, February 28, let’s disrupt the status quo by spending ONLY at businesses that uplift our communities.

That means:
🚫 No gas from corporate giants
🚫 No fast food chains
🚫 No big-box retailers (Target, Walmart, Amazon, etc.)

Excellent thread by @jeffedm.bsky.social on why the loss of the DHS program matters so much, not just to demographers, but to the world.
I’ve struggled to find the right words following Musk/Trump’s decision to end the Demographic and Health Surveys Program (the OG DHS). While nothing is inevitable, there is no denying this is a huge blow personally, professionally and for the world.

Each institutional and data loss is a shock but I really can't imagine a world without the DHS. I've used it for my whole career and for most of the indicators there isn't a comparable source for that data.

FALSE. They're either ignorant of how USAID spends money, or willfully lying about it. Or...

Anyway, caffeinate and read on.

Excellent 🧵 on this evening's NIH announcement of a dramatic reduction in indirect rates for research institutions, which amounts to a generational restructuring of the US research and development ecosystem. These cuts are effective immediately, not just for new grants but for existing ones.
6. The policy does not just affect funding going forward. All existing NIH grants will have their indirect rates cut to 15% as of today, the date of issuance.

For a large university, this creates a sudden and catastrophic shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars against already budgeted funds.
