But to me he was Papa. He taught me how to hoe a row, how to drive (when I was 10), how to fry okra & chicken, he let me have all his best flannel shirts when I was a 90s teenager, and when I moved away he used to mail me vegetables from his garden so I could still taste a real tomato in the summer.

Life feels short even when it's long. My grandfather died Thursday at the age of 93. He was many things in his life: a student in a one-room schoolhouse, 1st Lieutenant in the Army, math teacher, government employee, Sunday school teacher, farmer, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

The list could go on, and trends are moving in the wrong direction. We have to do better. I spend a lot of time around kids, and I would say they always surprise me with their reflections and thoughtful questions, but now I've come to expect it. I'm glad the piece ends on a galvanizing note. (3/3)
