basic bitch liberalism / centre leftism is the index fund of political positions. you can outperform it case by case, but in the long run it's more reliable than anything else.
I do like that cringe resist winemums have turned out to be democracy's strongest soldiers.

They're basically big puzzles, & once you get the rhythm they quickly go from incomprehensibly complex to hopelessly easy. Then its replayability becomes a simple question of the player's ability to abstract a narrative from its workings, unless the player is simply a speeadsheet pervert (guilty)
In theory, I should love Paradox map games. I do, specifically Stellaris, but there's always something in me that is unsatisfied with them. They feel too quantitative rather than qualitative. My feelings about them are more complicated, I feel, but they're hard to put into words.

Woke: Keir Starmer is very similar to the pre-1994 Labour governments and that's good.
Bespoke: Keir Starmer's government is very similar to the pre-1994 Labour governments and that's bad.
The author says in all seriousness that the last Labour govt ended in 1979. I invite him to read what many on the left said in 1979 about Callaghan & then ask him to compare those comments with what he has written about Starmer. It’s very similar. magazine.newstatesman.com/2025/07/04/a...
Annus horribilis
Keir Starmer’s government does not represent the true Labour Party.

My hot-take on the Strategic Defence Review. It was over 130 pages - mine is thankfully less than that.

Let me know what you think.

This week on the blog: The logistics of Road War in Mad Max (and similar) settings: given logistical and tactical constraints, how might we actually expect warfare to be waged in a post-apocalypse?

The answer is...a little bit technical.

This week, we’re doing another ‘silly’ topic, but this being me, it is a silly logistics topic, because – as the saying goes – amateurs talk tactics, professionals tal…

As much as people like to dunk on liberal elitism, “these Nazi punks are crass idiots and I refuse to bow to my lessers” is, for me at least, necessary for morale and stiffens my backbone when I feel like giving up.

What I do not think the Washington understands is that it’s not Trump in himself that’s discrediting us to the allies. Every now and then in a democracy, the people elect a turd. It’s that the Constitution gives them a Mad King Removal button and they are too cowardly and cynical to press it.

I should also say I don’t think K-12 private schools should exist nor homeschooling be allowed.

Everyone should go to public schools and be required to have the same education regardless of class.

You shouldn’t be able to opt out of a common shared education for the sake of civic life. Send tweet.

I think Russian intelligence services cannot believe their good fortune at everything that is happening right now. This is a bonanza across the board. The vicious attack on Ukraine, nutters at the FBI, Gabbard at DNI, shredding of CI capabilities. A monumental tragedy for the West.
This is incredible. Knock yourself out, Russian intel services. “A person familiar with the matter …said analysts at the agency were verbally informed that they were not to follow or report on Russian threats, even though this had previously been a main focus for the agency.” Cc @ciaranm.bsky.social
