After the fog cleared up it was a beautiful sunny day. We had some great views of the Chehalem Valley from Bald Peak.

It's the season where our magnolias are starting to open their seed pods and release their glossy red seeds. However our magnolia trees are still producing new flowers. 🌱 #FlowerReport

Our Australian tree fern is looking good this year. Unfortunately it will soon be time to bring it indoors, where it doesn't seem to do as well. 🌱

We planted some new dahlias this spring. I was beginning to think this one wasn't even going to bloom, but now in mid-October, it is blooming for the first time. 🌱 #FlowerReport

A few pictures from our trip to Crater Lake National Park yesterday. It's so hard to believe this is the first time we've been there since we moved to Oregon. We plan to go back soon.

We visited the Dahlia festival at Swan Island Dahlias today. There is such a huge variety of Dahlias there and now I'm getting some ideas about more varieties I'd like to try in our yard. 🌱#FlowerReport

Here's a rare view of a hummingbird at rest, in between trips to the kniphofia and crocosmia flowers in our backyard.

Since it was a cloudy gray day, here are some oriental lilies to brighten it. 🌱#FlowerReport

unironically speaking, it's that quite a few of them no longer understand how their own industries work
I am going to be so fascinated to read the post-mortem about how a revolt lead by tech billionaires lead to a gutting of both scientific research, university education and immigrant labor, all key prerequisites to the very existence of their industries.
I can't stress enough how close U.S. science is to the cliff.

"Numbers released in May by the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicate that if Congress approves the cuts to the agency proposed by the White House, the number of early-career researchers it supports could fall by 78%" (@science.org)

After 17 years, we had to say goodbye to our cat, Shadow, yesterday. As sad as I am, at least I have so many memories of him, from the time I first brought him home from California to his last time laying in the sun yesterday.

I’ve had a thesis for a while that the sudden increase in the cost of debt is one of the main drivers behind people believing the economy sucks, and my God:
One chart that shows the huge gap between people with a ZIRP-era mortgage vs. those who don't.

Look, it seems pretty basic to me, but if you were recently a lobbyist getting paid $100,000 a month by Qatar, you automatically recuse yourself from giving DOJ clearance for gifts from Qatar.

Anyone in the Willamette Valley looking for rhododendrons should check out this sale. I've been going to their annual sale for several years now and have bought some great plants. It's tomorrow and this Saturday and next Friday and Saturday. They're out between Silverton and Mt. Angel.🌱
