My work is more niche than the big newsletters.

For me to keep making a living between The Bugbear Dispatch, freelancing, and occasional public speaking, I depend on reader support—both financial support and help finding my audience without Twitter.

Please help if you can. You have my gratitude ❤️
As you can see from my output lately, after losing my weekly openDemocracy column back in April and moving in June, I’m finally getting back into a groove.

Would you please support my work if you’re able?

That’s big news!

Here’s why I think it’s also the wave of the future:

Seems Bad!
Wonder if the NYT or WaPo will cover this kind of shit. There's a direct line between Trump and Vance talking about Haitians and the fact that they're now being specifically targeted by the Klan and mentioned alongside Springfield.

David Neiwert has been one of the sharpest observers and analysts of the US right since the 1980s. His work from the early 2000s is eerie in terms of how prescient it now seems. At the time, however , precious few mainstream outlets paid any attention to his reporting . prospect.org/politics/202...

If Kamala becomes president we should really focus on Canada electing a woman as president as well. I would love to see how a continent mostly run by women would work out.

Forgive me if this is all obvious, but:

1. For a very long time (since 1965, basically) American society has long been coming to a point where it has to decide whether it's going to be ruled as a multiracial democracy or a minoritarian apartheid regime.

This is a binary choice, no third options.

Truth is a direction, not a final destination. Truth is a method, not the sole preserve of any individual. The biggest threat to the truth is not falsehood, but bad faith bullshit that seeks to disrupt the democratic mechanisms thru which complex modern societies seek to generate actionable truths.

Tim Scott isn't a couchfucker because he's so earnest the joke isn't fun. Lauren Boebert isn't a couchfucker it's less shameful than her real life. Ted Cruz isn't a couchfucker because he'd take a selfie on a couch and ruin the joke in 24 hours.

But Vance? Vance is a couchfucker.

We should ask Republican candidates to explain why they think diversity is bad. "You use the word 'inclusion' with a negative connotation, so does that mean you're in favor of exclusion? If so, who do you think should be excluded?" Make them make the argument...or make them shut up about it.

The scariest part of the MAGA response to the attempted assassination of Trump is how consistently it’s blamed on a “they” who is apparently determined to destroy America. The idea that Hinckley and Crooks are connected in any way is ludicrous. But feeds a victimization narrative well.

Last year this time we were learning about a billionaire Nazi memorabilia enthusiast buying the house belonging to Clarence Thomas’s mom and paying for his nephew to attend a $60k per year private school, but we’re supposed to be worried that Beyoncé will have undue influence.
She disclosed a valuable gift that makes perfect sense for her to receive and somehow this is a problem when last week we got reporting that Trump literally asked for a billion dollar bribe to hollow out environmental regulations. Ok.

Under these circumstances, could I please ask you to boost this post though? That would help immensely—thanks!
Just found out openDemocracy is making major cuts, and I’m being laid off as a columnist.

Trump's latest bizarre argument in his fundraising emails is that "Biden's border bloodbath" is going to destroy social security and medicare, and Trump is the guy who will save those programs. Wut?

FWIW, undocumented workers contribute about $13 billion per year to SSA, and $3 billion to medicare.
