I'm a white British person. Had a long conversation with a colleague, also a white British person, about racism a few days ago

They consider themself anti-racist. I've seen them challenge overt racism, and champion non-white people (not as saviour, just using their privilege positively)
Your racism has nothing to do with your intention if you're a white American. Racism is the default mode your upbringing imprinted on you enforced constantly by society over your life. So don't think you have to have meant to be racist. Racism is systemic including in how you learned to think.

We avoided regulating the Internet to spur innovation

Under Conservative governments, there was a desire not to intervene in the market

Now, big firms dominate - diversity, creativity & safety have suffered

Let’s not make the same mistakes with AI.

Untangling racism is not complex. There's so much that's been written to refer to. But almost any Black person you meet with rare exceptions can break it all down to you from their life. But you cannot listen to Black people because of racism.
I've learned that untangling racism is extremely complex. There are in your face issues and small ones it takes forever to recognize. What perpetuates racism is we maintain a society where almost every white can live their daily lives without thinking about it at all.

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

I’ve never understood the adulation people have for Thatcher. She was a heartless monster who asset-stripped an entire country and squandered the money to buy votes. The idea that she was some sort of economic genius is farcical and the terrible state of the country today is her legacy.

It's like a deranged, white supremacist nativity play.

Tice as Joseph, Farage as Mary, Lee Anderson as the donkey. Vladimir Putin as the Heavenly Father.

what the “misuse” framing does is shift the onus on individual users when shit goes wrong leaving AI developers and vendors off the hook

if you think of colonialism as economic, physical and ideological domination, you'll see that the planet is colonised by a handful men

also, the goal of colonisation is not to keep earth habitable. it's the opposite: take, extract, and destroy
Humans will NEVER colonize another planet. Never.

If we can’t even agree to do the minimum to keep Earth habitable, there’s no way in hell we’ll cooperate to make another planet habitable.

A quick backgrounder on Nigeria for those who are just tuning in.

1. There's no Christian genocide, and certainly not on the part of the govt.

2. There has been a decade-long Islamist insurgency, mainly in the north but spreading in recent years, that has targeted many, including Christians.
