an unsurprisingly great summary, big picture, of how and where we have cornered ourselves economically the past few decades, by @sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com.
this is what i was trying to get at here, maybe successfully. people sometimes try to distinguish between "genuine" or "productive" gdp growth and "fake" gdp growth. but what could they possibly mean by that?

"Viewpoint diversity" implicitly assumes that all "viewpoints" are equal, and that social groups don't develop a consensus based on the judgement that some viewpoints are better than others. It's really a belief that the "marketplace of ideas" should guarantee shelf space for New Coke.
The fact that only 5% of college professors voted for a far-right narcissist whose policies will destroy our economy and democracy shows that universities lack real intellectual diversity.

Just some creepy armed Mad Max guys trying to gain entry to Dodgers Stadium.

ICE says it wasn’t them. DHS says they were Border Patrol. But honestly who the hell knows? They’ve given permission for any psycho to put on a ski mask, point a gun, grab people & throw them into an unmarked vehicle.

We are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss.

Commuter rail, we are often told, operates at a loss. But we spend even more on street and highways, and take in little direct revenue from them. Yet no one ever says they are operating at a loss.

Could headlines please not just take for granted that Trump “is doing” stuff he has no legal authority to do just because he said so? Because the implication to the reader is that he can in fact legitimately do these things.

Democrats are fundamentally misunderstanding the moment: We're not asking them to be *legislators* right now. We need them to be *politicians.*

There's nothing to be done about the legislative situation. They're right about that. But there's PLENTY to be done as politicians.
CNN: Is democratic leadership is doing enough?

SENATOR JACKY ROSEN: I think that we have to realize that we're in the minority. They have the White House, they have the House, and they have the Senate. So the tools that are available to us here as legislators...they are limited.
