A bit late, but Monday this week (Jan 5) marked two whole years since I had my cochlear implant “activated”. To say it has been life-changing, in all the best ways possible, would be an understatement.

In London a time comes every day where the ghosts get their own back. It's often subtle but always undeniable, and it's strongest in autumn & winter.

If you're ever at loose ends on Christmas Eve, pay respects at St Michael's Cornhill. Because here, down the alley, was Scrooge's counting house.

my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing.
they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors.
their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen.
their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.
This is so disgusting.

I’ve struggled to articulate this as effectively and succinctly.

🧵/ Today a damning parliamentary report on the state of palliative care services in England was published.

Services are patchy, underfunded & “ill-equipped” to address end-of-life needs.

Bereavement support is “frequently inaccessible.

The palliative care workforce is in a “critical” situation”.

I came to this country as a child refugee. No English, no certainty, no idea what my life could become. Britain gave me refuge.

Not on a timer, not with conditions attached, but with a chance to grow roots.

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

Excellent thread! Book covers with absolutely no relationship to the book contents are bonkers.
Pull up a chair, please. I think it's time to have a talk about book jackets. Particularly modern book jackets. Especially in the UK, and particularly in the crime genre. My sense is that publishers haven't known how to jacket crime novels since the 20th century. I have evidence.

If you have a secret or hidden phone, the government's Emergency Alerts could reveal your device, even if it's on silent or do not disturb.

Look at East Anglia - a science discovery desert. We used to have an amazing place in Norwich, based in one of our redundant churches. I loved taking my smalls there as well as taking my class on school trips. Gone.

But they're seriously under threat… 1/3
