I wish we could just blame the internet for this, but honestly I think a lot more has to do with the way nonprofit activism for decades told its employees to treat the work as their whole entire life, with the implicit promise that your work is your social/familial setting
One of the absolute worst things that Online has done to left-of-center politics is collapse activist organizing and emotional support groups into part of the same parasocial relationship slurry
if a flag being flown by a liberal at a protest full of liberals protesting lawless behavior by the government makes you feel "unsafe" i humbly submit you are either not serious about politics or in need of a therapist
