This is exactly why this piece is so important. The national conversation has largely flattened the effects of the VRA -- and it's potential demise -- to which party controls Congress. There's so much more to the VRA than that, and so much more on the line
I, for one, have only really thought about the VRA through the prism of federal elections, not local elections.

But this well-reported piece reminds us that ending the VRA will have an impact on ALL levels of representative government.

Black Residents in West Tennessee Just Won Fairer Districts. Now Comes SCOTUS. - Bolts
The Supreme Court may further erode the Voting Rights Act in an upcoming decision. Beyond affecting Congress, that would reverberate across local governments nationwide.

Congress wrote into the law that someone who overstays a visa while applying for asylum is not considered to be accruing “unlawful presence,” but it didn’t explicitly say those people couldn’t be arrested and detained — because it was presumed that they wouldn’t be. Well, Trump is doing it.
We came to LA as refugees from the USSR in 1991. Life wasn’t easy, but we persevered and, I dare say, came to contribute something of worth to this nation.

Had I experienced the following when I was a boy, I don’t know what would have become of me.

I am so disappointed that Fantasy Mag is closing. Arley and Shingai were doing really great work, and work that is important to the field.

If anyone has a spare whole magazine budget, hire them!
just sent ~270 form rejections for Fantasy Magazine - the mag is closing and issue 100 will not be published

Shingai & I felt this issue would be extremely important, particularly given the state of things in the US and the world

sending warmth & love to folks: keep going, keep shining!❤️‍🔥

It’s crazy to think about the crimes we’re going to learn about after this regime ends.

We’re already hearing about Watergate level crimes every week. Imagine what will come out after it’s over.

We’re going to need a full accounting of all that’s been done in violation of the constitution.

I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.
AirBnB CEO calling it “vibe revenue” just 👨‍🍳 😘

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

As I always say when some right-winger starts going on about "red tape that slows innovation", every regulation on the books represents a lesson we as a society learned the hard way, and then encoded so we wouldn't forget. It's someone's blood & pain.

At the community food pantry we’re donating to, and at this location alone, they are stuck eating $7,000-$10,000 a month (ie either cutting costs by eliminating jobs, services or scavenging for it) because of the lost federal dollars. A month.

Pardoning Nixon, moving beyond Watergate, brought us his henchmen for decades. Democrats aren't being magnanimous about letting bygones be bygones. They are being cowards. Holding people you know to account takes bravery, that they lack. So we need to make them do it kicking, dragging, & screaming.
There are going to be prominent Democrats and mainstream media voices who insist that we have to "turn the page" and "forgive and forget" and they should all be roundly ignored, if not mercilessly mocked.

Israel has held 16-year-old American, Mohammed Ibrahim, without trial, for 9 months.

He has been denied contact with family & his health is deteriorating. He says he falsely confessed to throwing a rock after being beaten.

America needs to secure his release NOW.

What queer person carries a pride flag while committing crimes?!

That's so blatantly transparently a false flag, it's 1960s Adam West Batman villain behaviour.
Three churches in Queens were vandalized in the early hours of October 5, when a suspect carrying a modified rainbow flag sprayed anti-Christian graffiti, including “anti-gay cult,” on their walls and sidewalks.

The party's candidates pushed issues regarding test scores and bus safety over debates about which bathrooms transgender students use and banning books from school libraries.
