A dreaded Honey Bee 🐝

How do bees make their honey? It all starts with foraging—worker bees fly up to 5 miles in search of nectar, burning through a huge amount of energy along the way. Once collected, the nectar is passed from bee to bee, gradually reducing its moisture until it thickens into the honey 🍯

Did you know bees have favourite food? 🌼 It’s all about nectar and pollen! Bees are drawn to plants that offer the best rewards—high nectar content, rich pollen, and colours they can easily spot (blues, purples & yellows). Some favourites include lavender, borage, heather, and fruit blossoms 🍏🍓.

The Secret Behind Beekeepers’ Smoke! 🍯

More bad news for our fuzzy friends. Bumble #bees are in big trouble all over the world. So are the rest of us.
Recently the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BCT) reported that, in 2024, British bumblebees experienced their worst year since the BCT started its monitoring campaign.

All of which begs an important question: what is happening to wild #bees in Britain?

First miner bees I’ve seen this spring. No sign of the Andrena nida who nest in the sand by the creek, and return in early evening to burrow down into the sand. I hope it’s just that it was too cold this morning and they never bothered to get out of bed. Will look again next week. #bees #insects

A ‘cuasnóg’ (a nest of wild bees) is directly translated as ‘a lucky find’ in Ó Donaill's Irish-English Dictionary (1977)

The nuances implied by this definition infiltrates folklore.

And so, the arrival of a swarm of bees is deemed to be a lucky omen💫

Born in Poland in 1811 Jan Dzierżon revolutionised beekeeping with his discoveries. His research led to the understanding of parthenogenesis, explaining how queen bees lay eggs without fertilisation and he designed the movable-frame hive, making hive management more efficient & accessible.

A few hours of sun on a warm day and bees that have survived the winter can fly out to make “cleansing flights”. The inside of a beehive is very clean and bees will only defecate outside so they’ve been holding it for weeks. #localhoney #belmar #jerseyfresh 🐝

My macro lens allowed me to conquer my fear of proximity to bees.
I imagine they were all thinking “There’s that weird stalker girl again, just ignore her and maybe she’ll go away!” 😂🐝🫶

Sunflowers make good companions to cucumbers and pole beans (dry or butter) by providing vine support and attracting pollinators. It’s true they emit a chemical that stunts growth of some nearby plants, so it’s best to avoid planting them next to green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, and brassicas. 🌱💚🐝
