If you ever worry about bumblebees in cold weather, just remember:
🧥They are covered in thick fur.
🌡️They can raise their body temperature by dislocating their wings and shivering their flight muscles.
❄️Their body can produce an antifreeze to stop ice crystals from forming and freezing their insides.

Where do bumblebees go in winter? And how do they know when to return in time for spring? 🐝🔮
February 8, 2026 at 10:11 AM
This month look out for early emerging Tree bumblebees 👀

Tree bumblebee queens can be seen during some winter months, but this species is more noticable in the summer when males fly around nest entrances, waiting to mate with new queens as they emerge🧡

Have you seen your first bumblebee of 2026?

It took just four days after planting this mahonia for the first hungry visitor to arrive: a Buff-tailed bumblebee queen 👑

What have you planted to feed winter-active bumblebees? How soon after planting something has it taken your local bumblebees to tuck in? ⏱️

Great news for nature in Scotland! 🐝🎉

Thank you to everyone who supported #ScotlandLovesNature and to the MSPs who strengthened the Bill. Congratulations to @scotlink.bsky.social on running a successful campaign!
Big win for Scotland’s nature! The Natural Environment Bill passed by MSPs will bring in legally binding targets to restore wildlife and habitats. Huge thanks to LINK’s members and supporters who helped make this happen! Let’s keep pushing for strong action and funding to restore Scotland’s nature.

Like many animals that hibernate, bumblebees must reach a certain weight to survive the winter 💪

Buff-tailed bumblebee queens, the largest in the UK, must weigh at least 0.6g – roughly the same as a grain of rice – but they can reach as much as 0.85g – less than a paperclip 🧷

Congratulations to @victoriamallinson.bsky.social for winning The Olivia Norfolk Prize for her research on the impact of spring cold snaps on bumblebee colonies.

In 2026, Victoria, a Trust-supported PhD student, hopes to examine the impact of real cold snaps using the BeeWalk dataset.

Is there something on my face?

Static electricity helps bumblebees to collect pollen. As the bumblebee flies, it builds up a positive charge on its hair which negatively charged pollen grains are attracted to ⚡

Digging up peat for garden compost harms bumblebees. It’s not good news for us either 🚨

It releases centuries of CO2 into the atmosphere and destroys irreplaceable habitats ⚠️

You can help. Urge the Government to end the sale of peat once and for all: https://ow.ly/8k5g50Y11Ub

🚨Our legally-protected wildlife sites are under threat.

Dismantling vital legal protections would put bumblebee habitats at risk.

You can tell @ed-miliband.bsky.social to keep nature safe. Add your voice to stop this: https://ow.ly/2ifi50XVYiH
