I’m sad about politics, sports, and personal and professional tragedies this year but on the flip side I’m in a national park and won’t have cell service 🤘

This is kinda all I wanted to hear. An acknowledgment from him, and a promise to learn from it. Coaches aren’t going to make the right call every time, and I have faith that next time he’ll do it better.
Adrián González on the Hershfelt substitution:

"With Hal's situation, we were receiving information that she wanted to continue, that she was trying [to do so]... It is circumstances that we need to learn [from]. Obviously now we can say the sub was late."

Oh, I'm about to bully y'all if this is true. Those are my friends who flew across the country to support y'all. Come on now.
Your fans flew across the country to celebrate you and your victory and you don't go over to acknowledge them?! That is FUCKED UP Gotham

Trinity Rodman on love from Spirit fans:

“I’ve always talked about how great the @spiritsquadron.bsky.social is, and DC as a whole, and we’re really bummed we couldn’t be having a parade now going back hopefully they’re still proud and we can try again next year.”

This is the flip side of the substitution: the Spirit have had an unshakable faith in one another, it's where all those last-second game-winning/equalizing goals came from this year.

Definitely easy to say "make the sub" for media as outsiders, we don't have those same bonds with that group.
That decision to make the sub in the moment is absolutely going to be talked about for a minute but in the grand scheme of things the unity this team has is a product of what Gonzalez has done this season and i look forward to what he will be able to do with this team in 2026

And also when we look back at the overall journey, it was a hell of a season:

• Challenge Cup win
• Trin, Rose, Casey all with epic result changing goals
• Aubrey playoff heroics once again
• Beating Orlando in Orlando—twice!
• Just watching them persevere

Bring on 2026, come what may until then

If there’s a rally at Audi next week like there was last year after the final, go if you can make it. These players who gave it all for us this season will need us now more than ever.

the situation came up in the most unfortunate time and ended up being the thing many people will point to, which is understandable. just sucks, from a human perspective he did the right thing. from a game management perspective it wasn't the right call. i personally value one more than the other.

i know i'm close to it and all but but i like that he wanted to give a player he's rode with since day one — and who was having a terrific game — time to stay in a championship game
I’m not gonna shit on Adrian cause that man pulled out a hell of a season with the spirit. But that sub is probably gonna haunt him for a bit

I do think if it seems like spirit fans are being a bit extra, it is useful to consider that 1) we live in a city under siege and have no representation; 2) our economy was gutted overnight; 3) the one thing a lot of us love lost two finals in a row due to gutting injury issues
November 23, 2025 at 3:28 AM
love my players and my team, they worked so hard all year through ridiculous injuries and stress, while giving a really battered city something to love and care about 💘❤️‍🔥

A heartfelt message from Spirit's supporters group to the squad on the eve of the NWSL final.

This team's relationship with their fans and community this season is a case study in pro soccer transcending its usual context. I sincerely hope other clubs across the continent (and beyond!) take notice.

“No pro franchise in town has leaned into the District, its residents and the issues they care about the way the Spirit has. It’s a beautiful combination of organic and intentional.”

Column | How the Washington Spirit embraced the soul of D.C.
During an anxious time in the nation’s capital, the NWSL team and its fans cemented a bond.
