It’s the holidays, so please buy my book. It’s a great gift for anyone who’s ever thought about destroying their student loan company, and it weighs enough to throw at your relatives who say shit like “but in 1972, college only cost a quarter!” www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Pa...

I didn’t know about this! 👇🏾
a PSA: most nonprofit newsrooms right now are probably participating in the NewsMatch program RIGHT NOW. That’s a program funded by a few foundations that “matches” your end-of-year donation.

If you set up $10 monthly, that literally unlocks $120 from NewsMatch.

So who could you support?
i promise i don’t mean to high horse this but if you’re thinking about giving lizza ten bucks there are a lot of good independent journalists whose work you could subscribe to for a month instead

Hey, I know things are tight, but if you have it, especially if you cancelled a sub to NYT or WaPo, please consider supporting independent journalism like Bolts with that extra cash 💜

We can build the media we deserve.
Bolts thrives with your support. And right now, NEWSMATCH is still on: The initiative doubles any gift you make to Bolts!

Easy: boltsmag.org/donate

But let me do this: I want to share some of our 2025 stories that I value the most.

Skim my 🧵: and if anything moves you, consider supporting us!

Just now on MSNBC: a great segment by @chrislhayes.bsky.social on the Bucks County sheriff candidate who ran against ICE’s 287g program.

Very proud our attention to how local elections matter to ICE policy at @boltsmag.org is helping put these local stakes in the national discourse. They matter.

Goodness. Closing beautifully with Vito Marcantonio: “If it be radicalism to believe that our natural resources should be used for the benefit of all, and not for the purpose of enriching just a few, then I plead guilty to the charge.”
UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 5: Vito Marcantonio

There are many who dismiss our vision for New York as impossible. To them, I say we need look only to our past for proof of how we can shape the future.

"Why don't people support welfare programs?"

Racism. More specifically, anti-Blackness.

White folks asked about who welfare serves overestimate the number of Black people on welfare. Not only that, but just the mere THOUGHT of who welfare supports led less white people to support it. #blacksky

You could just talk about Jim Crow. I promise you, there's no need to leave America's shores to talk about life in a fascist state
Under the Third Reich, most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state.

The dual state is characterized by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.
The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.
Authoritarianism—but make it look like the rule of law.
