One of Twitter’s best features was its versatility. It was as dynamic as we are, with communities linked by fandom, alma mater, hometown, academia, obscure hobbies, etc.

But academia left 💔 hoping to get back to learning from smart folks here across history, political science & the social sciences!

This is math a seven year old can do. The best intelligence in the world placed the number of Hamas fighters at around 20,000. Israel has killed more than 20 times that number. The IDF is a highly trained force ruling out negligence on this level. Ergo, this is a massive, calculated war crime.
'Of 200 bodies, only 10 were confirmed as Hamas members': IDF soldiers who served in Gaza tell Haaretz that anyone who crosses an imaginary line in the contested Neztarim corridor is shot to death, with every Palestinian casualty counting as a terrorist – even if they were just a child”

That's the first time UMich hockey has been swept in back-to-back games since ending the 1942-43 season with four straight shutout losses to Vic Heyliger's llinois program. #CollegeHockey

Google translated this into “The world view of the right is based on brain ghosts” and that’s the single best encapsulation of hallucinatory media-driven modern politics I’ve ever heard
Högerns världsbild bygger på hjärnspöken, detta får sen konsekvenser i verkligheten. För allt och alla, blir verkligheten. Ja det är fruktansvärt.
I think the fundamental breakdown is this: our politics are increasingly a frenzied reaction to a cartoonish false reality that we’ve constructed in our heads through endless social media consumption and discourse rather than the anything resembling the real world.

Y'all remember that first hit of Tate Forcier in '09 following the year of Nick Sheridan & Steven Threet? Tate & Denard were a seismic breath of fresh air.

Whenever I see people talk about how soft we are becoming as a society I'm reminded of J.S Mill's point that a strong man should want more equality, since he should be enormously repelled by the slavish attitudes induced by subordination and aspire to live among his equals.

Yes, this was the intended effect of Elon's Twitter takeover and it's worked as they hoped: vile gutter racists who openly believe things like "nonwhite people are genetically inferior savages" constitute a huge percentage of the engagement that political elites see, and the ideas get normalized.
There are journalists I like who I see now routinely politically converse with accounts who are mainly focused on the promotion of dishonest race science talking points. I'm just a random person, so I'm in no position to ask them what the hell they're doing, but someone should.

obviously there’s a lot underneath that, in terms of changing media consumption, how the political zeitgeist is increasingly propelled by memes, etc. but what ultimately happened is that people voted as if they were really angry and the things they were angry about mostly didn’t exist

"The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?... raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression."
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican president suggests Mexico could respond to any of Donald Trump's tariffs with tariffs of its own on US products.
