I wish ORCIDs were more widely used. You can add a secondary email address to your ORCID account, so even if you lose your institutional email, which is the norm rather than then exception, you can still use the same ORCID.

We discuss whether preprint servers and journals should introduce author identity verification for submitting manuscripts. This would probably speed up the submission process, is this worth the potential downsides?

Don't test interactions separately by group; it's not a direct test of your interaction hypothesis AND your test is underpowered in each group.
Remember, in OLS the interaction coefficient X*M IS how the slope of X/M changes for a 1 unit change in M/X.

This is important. People still do this a lot, and it ends up being a back-door method of inferring an interaction (e.g., “effect was significant in women but not men”)
“changes in statistical significance are often not themselves statistically significant. … even large changes in significance levels can correspond to small, nonsignificant changes in the underlying quantities.”

'Tis the season of flooded inboxes & time to reamplify this brilliant tip from @hannahrsnyder.bsky.social.
As semesters start and you find yourself repeatedly answering emails with the same questions from students, this is my annual reminder that you can make all your frequent responses email signatures and just select them from your signature list to respond. You're welcome. #academicsky

The Difference Between “Significant” and “Not Significant” is not Itself Statistically Significant

The first time I manned a booth at a career fair, a potential student came up to me and asked what options there were in our department for studying parapsychology. I managed through a rambling response to say that’s not really a thing anyone does. Student did not take a brochure.

A hundred years ago, finishing high school was something most people didn’t do. Sixty years ago a diploma was still a competitive advantage. Now it’s societal failure when graduation rates aren’t close to 100%. Something similar is happening with post-secondary education.
This is such a dumb stunt. If he really believed in this it would be a new policy not 20 “fellowship” slots… finance.yahoo.com/news/palanti...
Palantir says college is no longer a reliable training ground—so it hired 22 high school students instead: ‘Skip the debt. Skip the indoctrination.’
22 Gen Zers are currently graduating from Palantir’s Meritocracy Fellowship, as CEO Alex Karp calls his company "the best credential in tech."

This got me thinking about how academic success has changed in just the 20++ years since I was an undergrad. When I was looking for a thesis supervisor, I worked up the courage to ask my 3rd year cognition prof, who agreed on the spot.

I’ve spent the last 8 years(!) working from the position that HiTOP relies too much on analyses of traditional diagnoses, baking in limitations of the DSM, and that we need to move to symptom-level analyses to fix it
It turns out that rebuilding HiTOP from the ground up doesn’t change much 💀

A few days post-World Series heartbreak, I’m ready to pick whose jersey I want to wear next year. This was a tough one but what clinched it for me was Ernie Clement’s crotch-first Slide of Joy in game 7.

Thus it is with moral panics. Be wary, we'll be seeing more of the same.
